How do you make a gif file an avatar?

I tried, it won't play.

It might be too big. And I don't just mean dimensions, but could be too large a file. I read once that they have to be under a certain size or they won't play on here."See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"0

I am assuming you mean an animated .gif when you say it won't 'play'?
Yeah...most boards (including this one) have two size requirements - one, the maximum size of the image (here it is 100x100 pixels) and the other, the maximum size of the file in kb. You cannot exceed either or your avatar will not work.
I believe the specific maximum kb is shown on the page where you can browse for and upload an avatar.
