Ever listen to an album...

from a new band/artist that you've never heard of before and just be blown away the moment you listen to it?

For me it was White Denim's album "Fits". Hardly any new bands do that for me. Sure theres a lot of new bands I like a lot, but the majority of it takes a few listens to really get into it. I've actually had this album for over a year now but I decided to listen to it again today. Listening to it just reminded me how blown away I was from it when I first bought it. Anyone who hasn't heard this should seriously do yourself a favor and listen to it. Its honestly just a convoluted mess of ridiculous bass lines, insane drumming patterns and change ups, and hardcore guitar riffs/solos... but some how it all fits together beautifully. The first two songs are perfect examples of what I'm talking about.

Anyone else?

Oh shit, and when I first heard Tim by The Replacements (the band in my avatar) is was instantly hooked. It's a spectacular album.

  • Yep.

Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil.

The first time I listened to A7X, it was to this album...and frankly, I simply could not believe what I was hearing. An astounding effort - no two ways about it. The whole thing was brilliant, beginning to end. I was listening to it at work, actually...and I could barely accomplish anything - I was that blown away.

Put it this way - the last time I felt that way about a new band that I was making a first-time album purchase on was 20 years ago, when I purchased Ten.

It actually felt really good to have that happen to me again, after so long. I was beginning to wonder if it ever would....to listen to a band for the first time and just be THAT blown away by every single tune on the record, to the point where you go "Wow - these guys are fucking AWESOME!"

For me, that just doesn't happen.

It's only happened twice in the last 10 years or so, the albums in question were 'Leaders of the Free World' by Elbow, absolutely floored me on the first listen, and 'Sky Blue Sky' by Wilco, I played nothing else for about a fortnight after hearing it. They were the first albums by each band that I'd heard and I immediately went and bought everything in their back catalogues, they are one of only 4 bands/artists that I buy everything they release without question (Tom Waits and PJ are the other two if you were wondering)

  • The first Grinderman album (Nick Cave project). I was familiar with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, but this album was quite a departure. Kicked my ass (and still does). The follow-up album was great as well.

Not recently, but in the early/mid 90's there were a few bands whose debut album blew me away.

The Presidents Of The United States Of America - Self Titled
    Weezer - Blue Album
Bush (I know many Pearl Jam fans hate them) - Sixteen Stone
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
  • Great thread, by the way. Has caused me to put a few things in the Amazon shopping cart for later purchase.

I actually loved that album as well years ago when I was in middle school. I definitely do not like metal at all anymore, but I did love it on first listen when I was young.

oh and sixteen stone by Bush is great. I actually like Bush quite a bit. they were sort of the mid 90's "copycat" grunge band that did it right.

    yes.

Mad season- the second that bass line in "wake up" came in and then when Layne let out that first "wake up young man" I was blown away. Mike's solo on that song is siiickkkkk. :P One of the best solos he has ever done. May be may fave studio solo.

I also really liked Lifeless dead, but the whole record is flawless. It's awesome!

  • Songs yes, albums not necessarily.

I think the top 3 bands in the past few years I've discovered based on listening to one song and immediately loving them are:
Muse ---> Hysteria at Glastonbury 2004, doing research on Youtube before Lolla '07. Now my #3 band :)
White Stripes ---> Icky Thump, then bought all their albums
Black Keys ---> Tighten Up, heard on the radio after I started listening to the radio again after a long hiatus

As for albums I'd say PJ of course (Ten), Zeppelin (Zeppelin 4 I heard first, but I think 3 is better), Pink Floyd (The Wall), Sublime (self titled), Alanis Morrisette (Jagged Little Pill), Muse (Absolution, but again the video for Hysteria hooked me immediately). I'm sure there are others but that's all I can think of for now.

The only 2 bands that I have discovered recently that I was really impressed with was Mumford and Sons and The National. Both of their first albums (i believe that they are their first :? ) I really liked. The last album from Marcy Playground- Leaving Wonderland in a Fit of Rage, really impressed me too, considering noone hears much from them anymore.
    Other albums that wowed me:

Rain Dogs/Bone Machine (amongst others)- Tom Waits
    Purple- STP
    Pablo Honey- Radiohead
    Angel Dust- FNM
    The Idiot- Iggy Pop
    Closer- Joy Division

For me, it was Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction. I was listening to this album a year before GNR's popularity had exploded with Sweet Child o Mine. Loved it from the moment it came out because I realized that because I knew that this album was special and that it was defining moment in the evolution of rock music. I always took special pride in being able to say to people who gushed about GNR "Oh, Appetite for Destruction? I was listening to that album when it first came out... over a year ago."

Well, I don't think that A7X is really considered to be a metal band anymore. I think their first couple of albums are more metal - more screamo, etc. But starting with City of Evil, they started dialing back on the screamo, bit by bit....and I would classify them as hard rock these days...although they still have some forays into metal...and some forays into lighter rock in the form of a couple of really nice ballads, etc.

Not sure if you have heard them lately...but they are now much more of a cross-genre band. "Dear God", in fact, is pretty doggone close to Country, if you ask me! And "So Far Away" is a hearbreaking song (dedicated to The Rev) that gets me choked up every time I hear it.

Yeah....they are not all metal anymore. ;)
  • I remember first hearing Ryan Adams' "Gold"
From the first few guitar strums...instantly sold!

    :D
  • Recent ones for me....

    Biffy Clyro - Puzzle
Volbeat - Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood
Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare....never gave them a listen until this latest CD. Glad I finally did.
The VirginMarys - I basically discovered all 3 EPs at the same time

I got that thrill when I listened to, for the first time, these albums, which were the first album I listen to first from these bands:

    Neon Bible
    Howl
    Fleet Foxes
... I am not in the business of being liked anymore ...

Yeah man. I love that feeling when you feel hungry for more of that artist/band.

Upon hearing Colma by Buckethead I was blown away. I was expecting emotionless, shredding, guitar by numbers. I was floored and sought out more and become a big collector of his stuff.

Superunknown was another album that floored me too.

    The list could go on.

Ben Harper - Welcome to the Cruel World.
    Tool - Aenima
    Bob Marley - Exodus.

ahhhhh I love listening to music I havent listened to in awhile. Its like a breath of fresh air.

    MMJ-Tennessee Fire

Their best album. That airy, spacey, reverbed out vocal sound is just perfect. The production totally makes this album.

Heartless Bastards- The Mountain. I was absolutely floored right from the first song.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

    Seconded.

    I'd add
Iron & Wine ~ Our Endless Numbered Days
Drive By Truckers ~ Southern Rock Opera
    Grateful Dead ~ Live/Dead
Flaming Lips ~ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
    Lucinda Williams ~ Essence
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
