CIA Spies Caught, Fear Execution in Middle East
http://gma.yahoo.com/exclusive-cia-spie ... 19159.html
In a significant failure for the United States in the Mideast, more than a dozen spies working for the CIA in Iran and Lebanon have been caught and the U.S. government fears they will be or have been executed, according to four current and former U.S. officials with connections to the intelligence community.
The spies were paid informants recruited by the CIA for two distinct espionage rings targeting Iran and the Beirut-based Hezbollah organization, considered by the U.S. to be a terror group backed by Iran.
"Espionage is a risky business," a U.S. official briefed on the developments told ABC News, confirming the loss of the unspecified number of spies over the last six months.
"Many risks lead to wins, but some result in occasional setbacks," the official said.
Robert Baer, a former senior CIA officer who worked against Hezbollah while stationed in Beirut in the 1980's, said Hezbollah typically executes individuals suspected of or caught spying.
"If they were genuine spies, spying against Hezbollah, I don't think we'll ever see them again," he said. "These guys are very, very vicious and unforgiving."
Other current and former officials said the discovery of the two U.S. spy rings occurred separately, but amounted to a setback of significant proportions in efforts to track the activities of the Iranian nuclear program and the intentions of Hezbollah against Israel.
"Remember, this group was responsible for killing more Americans than any other terrorist group before 9/11," said a U.S. official. Attacks on the U.S. embassy and Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983 killed more than 300 people, including almost 260 Americans.
The U.S. official, speaking for the record but without attribution, gave grudging credit to the efforts of Iran and Hezbollah to detect and expose U.S. and Israeli espionage.
"Collecting sensitive information on adversaries who are aggressively trying to uncover spies in their midst will always be fraught with risk," said the U.S. official briefed on the spy ring bust.
But others inside the American intelligence community say sloppy "tradecraft" -- the method of covert operations -- by the CIA is also to blame for the disruption of the vital spy networks.
In Beirut, two Hezbollah double agents pretended to go to work for the CIA. Hezbollah then learned of the restaurant where multiple CIA officers were meeting with several agents, according to the four current and former officials briefed on the case. The CIA used the codeword "PIZZA" when discussing where to meet with the agents, according to U.S. officials. Two former officials describe the location as a Beirut Pizza Hut. A current US official denied that CIA officers met their agents at Pizza Hut.
From there, Hezbollah's internal security arm identified at least a dozen informants, and the identities of several CIA case officers.
Hezbollah then began to "roll up" much of the CIA's network against the terror group, the officials said.
One former senior intelligence official told ABC News that CIA officers ignored warnings that the operation could be compromised by using the same location for meetings with multiple assets.
"We were lazy and the CIA is now flying blind against Hezbollah," the former official said.
CIA Spies Caught in Iran
At about the same time that Hezbollah was identifying the CIA network in Lebanon, Iranian intelligence agents discovered a secret internet communication method used by CIA-paid assets in Iran.
The CIA has yet to determine precisely how many of its assets were compromised in Iran, but the number could be in the dozens, according to one current and one former U.S. intelligence official.
The exposure of the two spy networks was first announced in widely ignored televised statements by Iranian and Hezbollah leaders. U.S. officials tell ABC News that much of what was broadcast was, in fact, true.
Hezbollah's leader, Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah, announced in June of this year that two high-ranking members of Hezbollah had been exposed as CIA spies, leading U.S. officials to conclude that the entire network inside Hezbollah had been compromised.
In Iran, intelligence minister Heidar Moslehi announced in May that more than 30 U.S. and Israeli spies had been discovered and an Iranian television program, which acts as a front for Iran's government, showed images of internet sites used by the U.S. for secret communication with the spies.
U.S. officials said the Iranian television program showed pictures of people who were not U.S. assets, but the program's video of the websites used by the CIA was accurate.
Some former U.S. intelligence officials say the developments are the result of a lack of professionalism in the U.S. intelligence community.
"We've lost the tradition of espionage," said one former official who still consults for the U.S. intelligence community. "Officers take short cuts and no one is held accountable," he said.
But at the CIA, officials say such risks come with the territory.
"Hezbollah is an extremely complicated enemy," said a U.S. official. "It's a determined terrorist group, a powerful political player, a mighty military and an accomplished intelligence operation, formidable and ruthless. No one underestimates its capabilities."
"If you lose an asset, one source, that's normally a setback in espionage," said Robert Baer, who was considered an expert on Hezbollah.
"But when you lose your entire station, either in Tehran or Beirut, that's a catastrophe, that just shouldn't be. And the only way that ever happens is when you're mishandling sources."

Hopefully Hezbollah simply cuts off their heads, and leaves it at that.
Tit for Tat. No Escalation.
Hopefully we don't start drumming over here, either.
On a side note, Robert Baer is a BADASS.
The (rather awesome) movie, Syriana, was inspired by his own book, and he had the balls to say in an interview that evidence implied US intelligence involvement in 9/11.
Woop woop.
If I opened it now would you not understand?
i could easliy see how a clandestine organization like the cia could be pulling strings in this situation...

you guys appear to be only focusing on the gov't and expenditures ... but we both know that isn't the problem ... it's the military industrial complex and ultimately the corporatization of gov't ... you can cut spending 50% but all that will mean is programs like education and environmental audits get cut ... but the corps are still gonna get their hands on whatever money is there ...
ANYTHING is possible.
If we can get through 2012 with out Israel and Iran blowing each other up, I will feel MUCH relieved.
I've heard this angel pushed in so many conspiracy theories that I'm honestly more scared of this single possibility right now than ANY other.
I try to have faith that those with the Triangles and Eyes over their heads are more kind in their intentions, but the thing that freaks me out the most is the "Three World Wars" Pike-Mazzini conspiracy allegations.
If you don't know what I am talking about, look at the wiki page for William Guy Carr under "Three World Wars".
This isn't some new, bullshit, internet rumor. The guy published this allegation in 1955
It seems,
a. entirely plausible
b. the first two wars he describes, he is actually right (imho) about those, of course, after the fact.
c. scary as fucking hell.
HERE IS THE PORTION OF Pawns In The Game, IN FULL, THAT I SPEAK OF, remember, from 1955!!!
In 1834 the Italian revolutionary leader Gussepi Mazzini was selected by the Illuminati to be
director of their revolutionary programme throughout the world. He held this post until he died
in 1872.
In 1840, General Albert Pike was brought under the influence of Mazzini because he became a
disgruntled officer when President Jefferson Davis disbanded his auxiliary Indian troops on the
grounds they had committed atrocities under the cloak of legitimate warfare. Pike accepted the
idea of a one world government and ultimately became head of the Luciferian Priesthood.
Between 1859, and 1871, he worked out the details of a military blue-print, for three world
wars, and three major revolutions which he considered would further the conspiracy to its final
stage during the twentieth century.
Most of his work was done in the 13 room mansion, he built in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1840.
When the Illuminati, and the lodges of the Grand Orient, became suspect, because of Mazzini’s
revolutionary activities in Europe, Pike organized the New and Reformed Palladian Rite. He
established three supreme councils; one in Charleston, S.C., another in Rome, Italy and another
in Berlin, Germany. He had Mazzini establish twenty three subordinate councils in strategic
locations throughout the world. These have been the secret headquarters of the world
revolutionary movement ever since. Long before Marconi invented wireless (Radio), the
scientists who were of the Illuminati had made it possible for Pike and the Heads of his councils
to communicate secretly. It was the discovery of this secret that enabled intelligence officers to
understand how apparently unrelated ‘incidents’ took place simultaneously throughout the
world which aggravated a situation and developed into a war or revolution.
Pike’s plan was as simple as it has proved effective. He required that Communism, Naziism,
Political Zionism, and other International movements be organized and used to foment the three
global wars and three major revolutions. The first world war was to be fought so as to enable
the Illuminati to overthrow the powers of the Tzars in Russia and turn that country into the
stronghold of Atheistic-Communism. The differences stirred up by agentur of the Illuminati
between the British and German Empires were to be used to foment this war. After the war
ended, Communism was to be built up and used to destroy other governments and weaken
religions.
World War Two, was to be fomented by using the differences between Fascists and Political
Zionists. This war was to be fought so that Naziism would be destroyed and the power of
Political Zionism increased so that the sovereign state of Israel could be established in
Palestine. During world war two International Communism was to be built up until it equalled
in strength that of united Christendom. At this point it was to be contained and kept in check
until required for the final social cataclysm. Can any informed person deny Roosevelt and
Churchill did not put this policy into effect ?
World War Three is to be fomented by using the differences the agentur of the Illuminati stir up between Political Zionists and the leaders of the Moslem world. The war is to be directed in such a manner that Islam (the Arab World including Mohammedanism) and Political Zionism
(including the State of Israel) will destroy themselves while at the same time the remaining nations, once more divided against each other on this issue, will be forced to fight themselves into a state of complete exhaustion physically, mentally, spiritually and economically. Can any unbiased and reasoning person deny that the intrigue now going on in the Near, Middle, and Far East isn’t designed to accomplish this devilish purpose ?
On August 15, 1871, Pike told Mazzini that after World War Three is ended, those who aspire
to undisputed world domination will provoke the greatest social cataclysm the world has ever
known. We quote his own written words (taken from the letter catalogued in the British
Museum Library, London, Eng.) :
“We shall unleash the Nihilists and Atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm
which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of
savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend
themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of
civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with christianity, whose deistic spirits will be from that
moment without compass (direction), anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its
adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of
Lucifer brought finally out in the public view, a manifestation which will result from the general
reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of christianity and atheism, both
conquered and exterminated at the same time.”
When Mazzini died in 1872, Pike made another Italian revolutionary leader, named Adriano
Lemmi, his successor. Lemmi was later succeeded by Lenin and Trotsky. The revolutionary
activities of all these men were financed by British, French, German, and American
international bankers. The reader must remember that the International Bankers of to-day, like
the Money-Changers of Christ’s day, are only tools or agents of the Illuminati.
While the general public has been lead to believe that Communism is a movement of the
workers (soviets) to destroy Capitalism, Pawns In The Game and The Red Fog Over America
prove that both British and American Intelligence Officers obtained authentic documentary
evidence which proved that internationalist capitalists operating through their international
banking houses had financed both sides in every war and revolution fought since 1776. Those
who to-day comprise The Synagogue of Satan direct our governments, whom they hold in
usury, to fight the wars and revolutions so they further Pike’s plans to bring the world to that
stage of the conspiracy when Atheistic-Communism and the whole of Christendom can be
forced into an all-out war within each remaining nation as well as on an international scale.
YIKES
If I opened it now would you not understand?
the way I look at it is cutting 50% from the defense budget means they can do 50% less damage. and in the case of our military industrial complex, 50% is a shitload
Instead of giving 30% of my income to the feds, I would much rather that money go to state and local governments to waste...less government reach, less reach for the people who abuse the government for their own gain. but that is something different entirely.
I think we can all agree that this seems to be simply a way to further beat the war drums while people here become sympathetic to the spies and view the enemy as animals. Can't wait for the Iranian invasion...I wonder if Bodog.com has lines on who will be the next puppet installed

Or you can continue to give congress an open checkbook, not force them to balance the budget, and see what happens. Now, where is my magic 8-ball?
uhh ... what anger and pressure!?? ... anger and pressure should have been exhibited a long time ago ...
You seem to forget how narcissistic this nation has become.
Seems it would be a win/win for both sides since no one dies and waterboarding really isn't such a bad thing, right?
Hail, Hail!!!
uhhh ... you guys are spending how much money on a war based on lies!? ... the democracy is weak ... i'm not sure what it would take to actually get people to do something but it won't be cuts to these programs ...
the boondoggle that is congress should be enough to get the pitchforks out ...
Do you think people here voted in a sweeping change to the house and senate in 2006 and 08 in order to continue the same policies on those things like the war? Do you think people here voted for Obama because he said he would continue the wars? do you think people here voted for Obama because he was to be more of the same? most people who voted for the him should feel like he, and those they put into congress, took them for a ride, but that doesn't mean they didn't get angry and didn't try to make change with their votes. They were sold a bill of goods, all we can do now is hope that they learned their lesson and will vote for a politician with a proven track record of doing what they say.
the reason that there hasn't been uprisings in the streets here is because that nothing is being cut domestically because of the wars.
It is terrifying when you are too stupid to know who is dumb
- Joe Rogan
dude ... obama is not the problem ... many of us said that he wouldn't be able to deliver the goods ... he has no power ... this isn't about voting the next guy in ... i'm sorry but as i keep asking in ron paul threads which no one can answer is how is ron paul going to effect the lobbyists and the military industrial complex!? ... he can't ... not unless the people actually strengthen their democracy which means being engaged, voting and not apathetic ...
I wasn't calling Obama the problem. I was saying that people listened to him. People got involved. They were just taken for a bit of a ride. That is all I was saying.
Many people didn't say he wouldn't be able to deliver. They said that AFTER he wasn't able to...you might have, but you and 3 others don't count as many. People were involved, they just got it wrong. They will probably continue to as the people who are new to politics get their feet wet. I have only taken part in a few elections, as I am only 32, so I too am only getting my feet wet when it comes to politics. But young people especially are getting involved and as they learn more about the process the more change will come. I think people, at least with seeing things like OWS and the TEA party spring up are showing that there will be more as they continue to get involved and start to finally try to effect change rather than complain about others apathy.
More and more people see this type of story as what it is, beating the drum.
as to your other question that has been answered for you in the past, Ron Paul, as the commander and chief, will bring the military home. Will bring the national guard home. Those are things they can do. They can order it. and he will. He will also have a non-interventinalist foreign policy. Ron Paul has a track record of doing exactly what he says. Voting exactly how he said he will and explains why he did it. And for at least 4 years our troops will not be in foreign countries and in foreign wars that make no sense. After that I couldn't tell you. You can choose to believe him or not, I choose to believe him as he has a proven track record of voting how he says he will. If you want to continue to feel powerless against the complex you can go right ahead. I choose to believe that there are people out there that will stand up to them, otherwise what is the point?...It may take a while, and it may take lives, but eventually it will happen. If Wellstone can get elected, and Paul can get elected and a few others, well that just proves to me that people can support those who have conviction. and that brings me hope for the future.
But this thread isn't about Ron Paul. For fear of derailing it further I suggest your response come via PM so we can continue.
It is terrifying when you are too stupid to know who is dumb

I believe I've given you this answer before. If I haven't, I'll state it now-- the commander- in-chief has all of the power to bring the troops home whenever he or she wishes through executive order. There is NOTHING Congress can do about this. The less our physical military presences around the globe, the less need there is to continually supply those troops with additional weapons, vehicles, armor, housing, food, etc... We don't have to keep re-manufacturing bombs if we're not dropping any. Any crazy spending bills authorized by Congress can still be vetoed by the president-- in which Congress needs to be REALLY determined to pass the bill to get a 3/4 majority (or 2/3, I forget) to over-ride the veto. Dr. Paul has publicly stated that he would bring the troops home ASAP, and anyone who knows his track record of voting against wasteful spending knows that he would exercise his power to veto far more than any other president ever. Throw in a huge push for more accountability and transparency of The Fed, and we would know exactly how much UNAUTHORIZED spending is being done by our central bank to well-connected corporations. Not to mention, the next president is going to appoint a new Fed Chairmen, and Paul would nominate a number of his friends from the Austrian School that do not believe in bailing out businesses or printing money to finance overbloated government. Just because no other president has chosen to exercise these powers legally doesn't mean he wouldn't. He's doing great in the polls right now. He's second in New Hampshire and was recently statistically tied in Iowa. If people are serious about changing the direction of the country right now, they have to get behind Paul in the Republican primaries, even if they have no intention of voting for him. He's the only guy that can keep Obama honest.
sorry Vinny - i don't want to know what he says he's gonna do ... i am asking you guys HOW he is going to do it ... congress isn't keeping the military forces in afghanistan ... the powers that require the gov't to engage and spend on conflict is (mic) ... how is dr. paul going to go against the mic? ... how is dr. paul going to institute an isolationist type policy when military open or covert action is a primary avenue by which economic imperialism is enforced?
edit: same response for you mike as well ...
I don't know what you mean I guess. He will bring the troops home. that simple. It isn't any more complicated than that. they will come home. for better or worse in Iraq and Afghanistan. Japan, Germany, Turkey, every where. they come home. Foreign policy will be in short terms "Good luck world the police force is retiring"
He will also not authorize the use of force for nation building, poor intelligence or anything else. Without covering every hypothetical, that is how. What more are you looking for? what more do you want to be said?
it isn't isolationism it is non-interventionism.
The bigger question that should be asked is how will the MIC deal with a president who will not increase the size of the military nor its reach around the world?
your question isn't possibly going to be answered to your liking if you ignore the response. you ask how is he going to deal with the MIC....the answer is he is going to pull back the military reach of the united states by first pulling home the troops and secondly by not using our military in response to every world crisis. so again, the better question would be how will the MIC deal with a shrinking budget and less military reach around the world.
It is terrifying when you are too stupid to know who is dumb

Well, the fact that we are at in some sort of conflict, is the reason why there remains a blank checkbook for entities like the Military Industrial Complex. Take away the wars, the bases, the provocation by being in countries that don't want us there, and budgets for these types of activities will begin to dry up. The MIC is always going to lobby like crazy to plunder the American people out of money for "Star Wars" type projects even after the violence and overseas occupations have ceased. While this is still not good, and should be done away with, it's better to be wasteful with weapons we're never going to use. Since we're fighthing, the spending seems "justified" to many, even if the conflicts themselves don't make sense-- and people are waking up to how ridiculous these bullshit wars more and more everyday. It's the same way lobbies work for all types of programs, laws, subsidies, etc... Lobbyists present a "need" for something, grease politicians, and the rest of us foot the bill. Unless you rid the world of greed, there will always be an attempt by private entities to fleece the taxpayers on a national level by promising something for the greater good, be it warfare or welfare. The fact is, there are 2 ways they can get money for these type of things: Congress has to allocate the money, in which case, they also need a president to be on board to sign the spending bill. President Paul would be no such president. The other way is secret transactions through the central bank. President Paul would be the only president to make stopping taxpayer money from being funneled secretly to corporations. It's all so hard to imagine because every president this century has been complicit in allowing speding to be out of control by being the last one that gets to authorize spending, as well as paying ZERO attention to the actions of The Fed. This is why people like myself take the stance that we do, and make it all very black and white, via strict interpretation of the Constitution, and a larger emphasis on state's rights. If we're going to plunder each other (not my preference, but it's the current way of the world), it should be at the most local levels, where change is possible, where bad programs can die if ineffective. While I'd loved to see an end to totally unchecked greed tomorrow, I don't see it as a possibility, not quickly anyway. I believe that giving greed a giant hired gun in the name of the federal government (or any other mob-like entity) is the greatest facilitator of the greedy getting exactly what they want. The best way to end greed would to be to advocate a system where the ends of greed cannot be obtained by force. Ironically, those claiming to be the most benevolent people are those who are most in favor of coercion to obtain their ends.
Is Ron Paul an automatic answer for putting a stop to the forces that attempt to rip off the people of this country and the world at large? No. But he is our best shot. Electing him as president of the USA would indicate a signifcant shift in how people view the role of government and it's authority to giveth and taketh away, or at least would signify that people are in search of a truly honest leader for the first time in a very long time.
dr.paulmobile
done and done.
and a much better chance of fixing things then a revolution ... just ask the egyptians.
haha
if only that would be enough ...
well ... i believe in tony stark more than i do the people right now ...
As POTUS, Ron Paul has the direct authority to bring the troops home. He has that power. It's a shame Ron Paul is the only one consistent about wanting that. Anyone who is serious with their talk of ending wars and expresses concerns with Foreign Policy decisions being made can now make their voices count.
Question is. How much do these "talkers" really want it?
