About Eddie's acoustic Martin guitar.
Does somebody know which pickup his Martin guitar has?
And which acoustic amplifier he uses on stage?

Which acoustic guitar amp & pickup would you recommend?

  • At Eddie's level, you usually don't have acoustic amps. Most often, the guitar is sent to the PA system via something called a Direct Injection, or DI, box. That converts the instrument's signal into something that is more like a microphone signal, which can then be sent to the mixer of the PA. These can be little $40 boxes (Whirlwind IMP) to $600 boxes (Avalon U5) and everything in between. Some folks make acoustic preamps that go between the guitar and DI, and some even make preamp/DI combos (LR Baggs Para DI and Venue DI, Radial PZ Pre, Fishman Aura DI). I know that he used an old (1960's) Shure Vocal Master PA system as a monitoring system for his solo tour stuff, but the audience is hearing a signal from a pickup and DI.

I'm not sure what Eddie has installed for pickups in his guitars. I have heard mention of Fishman, but I couldn't tell you what model. In general, Fishman and LR Baggs are good and you can't really go wrong with them.

As for recommending an acoustic guitar amp, it really depends on what the use of the amp would be. In general, I wouldn't recommend an acoustic guitar amp, with a few exceptions. If I ever need to amplify an acoustic (for band rehearsals, concerts, etc) I use a DI and PA system rather than an acoustic amp. I personally own and use the Radial PZ Pre preamp/DI, and it's awesome, but if I had to replace it, I'd probably get the LR Baggs Venue, which has most of the same features with an added tuner.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

We play mostly living-room concerts. For this, do you recommend an acoustic amp, or should we still use a DI (does this fits with an electric amp? I'm not such a technician).

An if you recommend an acoustic amp, which one to prefer? Fender acoustasonic, Roland AC, Fishman Loudbox, ...)

I'd recommend a small PA system with a DI for the acoustic.

OK, but I think a small PA and a DI is still more expensive than an ancoustic amp (which PA an DI would you recommend?).
Perhaps an acoustic amp is a cheaper alternative?

I don't know anything about acoustic amps, everything I've played through has sounded good, but I can't really see where they'd be useful, as if you're playing through that you're probably miking vocals meaning you're gonna need the PA anyways.
