So I finally took the plunge and just ordered a new macbook pro. I know there are several ways to transfer your iTunes to the new computer. Is there an easy way to do it without losing playlists and play counts?

I used to transfer my Itunes library from one computer to another, but that has always been mac -> mac - I would transfer ITunes music only or the whole ITunes folder if I wanted to keep my playlists, artworks and such (or just selected folders or files from the ITunes folder, but that's irrelevant right now). Yet, I don't know if, besides the obvious Itunes music folder, the files formats are the same between ITunes for mac and ITunes for windows, namely if mac can run your Windows ITunes folder just as it is.

If it's the case, you may just replace your ITunes folder on your mac by your ITunes folder from your PC and your mac won't even know you did it and will play it (be sure to not have any music in your mac ITunes library, or else move the mp3 files from your mac to your desktop and reimport them after you've moved your PC Itunes folder).

If that's not the case, you might want to read what they suggest here :

  • If you have an older version I'd update it. That new MBP will have the latest more than likely and if you have an older one your playlists and music library won't transfer.

I went through this myself last year. Definitely agree with updating iTunes. If you have iTunes set to move everything into it's folder it should be as simple as copying the iTunes folder. Don't forget to de-authorize the PC too :)

Why did you order a Macbook Pro, you know you can just buy a £400/500 laptop that is the exact same spec, and if you don't like Windows you can just put Mac OS X on it. You just payed a lot for a shiny metal case.

I've seen OSX on non-Mac machines, and it's not pretty.

When I had a PC I had OS X on it. It was even running on an AMD chipset.
