Now that's surprising that you'd have Death Magnetic so far below Load and ReLoad. Is it because of Death Magnetic's crappy over-compression or do you just dislike the songs that much? After their 1996-2003 output, I was doing cartwheels over Death Magnetic. It puts Backspacer to shame as far as "9th albums by bands that have been around a long time" go.

while vastly overplayed, the Black album still has some kickass songs.

Sounds like band trying too hard to be something they're not anymore. I'm not a big fan of BS relative to other PJ albums, but I think it's a more musically honest album than Death Magnetic.

That may be true but I have no problem with it...especailly after how god-awful St. Anger was. 20 years from now I think I could listen to "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "All Nightmare Long" back-to-back and I'll think to myself "these are two good songs" as opposed to " one's a good song and one is trying to be like the other." On the other hand, if I listen to "Go" 20 years from now and then listen to "The Fixer", I'll say "one song is great and the other sucks." If I was a more obsessive Metallica fan, maybe I'd be down on Death Magnetic trying to rehash the glory years, but as someone who falls dead in the middle between "casual" and "obsessed" Metallica fan, I'm just happy they finally made a record I can listen to all the way through and enjoy.

Unlike a lot of people I despise the Black album. I just couldn't stand the 3-4 minute pop songs on there. And the sound is way over-produced. A lot of people point to Load/Reload as pandering to the alternative crowd or selling out or whatever, but to me the Black album is more guilty of that than anything. Like they set out to make radio-friendly hits instead of just letting them come naturally. Maybe it suffers from over play but I just can't stand Enter Sandman and all of that.

I don't think Load gets the credit it deserves. Bleeding Me is one of the heaviest, darkest tunes they have ever done. I loved Outlaw Torn, Until it Sleeps, Wasting My Hate, Hero of the Day, The House that Jack Built, etc. Great album IMO.

Reload felt like leftovers with one or two pretty decent songs. I dig Fuel and The Memory Remains and Fixxer.

The Top 3 for me are pretty interchangeable and I don't think too many people dispute their greatness. I was never really a fan of Kill 'em All. Four Horsemen is awesome. Seek and Destroy is tiresome to me. And I don't really care for the other stuff like Blitzkrieg, Hit the Lights, etc.

i like demo magnetic just as much as death magnetic & the shows from that tour-stellar. i also like st. anger, the rehearsals. the drum sound does get grating, though. i've found that if you trim it down to 9 songs, it's not that bad. lulu- i am disillusioned by it... as far as their 1st 4 go- well, puppets, justice, kill, ride. load/reload are good, too. garage, inc. disc 2-flawless. disc 1- mixed up with i disappear,-human & no leaf clover & called it whiskey in the jar. if i'm not happy with a record i make my own mix of it. the demos from death magnetic are stellar, though. the live versions, great. i love the record 2, but have to turn it down to fully enjoy it..(wtf?)

It's a valid opinion though. The mixing and compression/clipping issues really make it a fatiguing album to listen to over a long period of time. It f'ing rocks, but it has severe flaws. A remastered release, assuming the album was recorded correctly and only mixed horribly, would do wonders.

It's a valid opinion though. The mixing and compression/clipping issues really make it a fatiguing album to listen to over a long period of time. It f'ing rocks, but it has severe flaws. A remastered release, assuming the album was recorded correctly and only mixed horribly, would do wonders.

Find a torrent of the Guitar Hero 3 version of the album. It sounds great. It's the only version I listen to.
