You are not alone. As well as the notion that the strong should protect the weak.
Seems like the ones who think the poor or downtrodden or the ones who just happen to hit a bad patch on road should be neglected are the ones who say they read and follow the teachings of Jesus in the Bible.

How would you decide who fits in the 'cannot' work group and the 'will not' work group?

I have no sympathy for such a person. pride does not put food on the table. if pride keeps someone from working, that someone should also feel that social assistance is degarding and insulting. I have worked minimum wage many times, and right now my return is meager, and yet I go every day.

from my exxperience I have found that employers seem to prefer people who are already in the workforce over those on welfare. so taking a degrading job to me makes someone more atractive to employ. shows that they have ticker.
but this womens opinions are very narrow minded
there are a lack of jobs in The USA at the moment, people who want to work cannot get any and this is the time the community should help those people.
when you have good solid employment possabilities and people refuse work well thats a different story

I think we mostly all agree to this. My point was made for two reasons- first because I really don't think anyone should go hungry- period- and secondly because I would ask- who is to judge who is lazy and who is not? I know and have known people with invisible disabilities- both physical and mental- who probably appear to some people to be lazy and yet I know they are disabled. They should not starve. There's plenty to go around- especially in this country.

I think it would be great if we could construct a social system in which everyone's basic needs are met as well as the means to exceed those means up to a reasonable point. Call me idealistic, but I think it is possible. I've heard of such a plan and will ask the architect permission to post her ideas here sometime.

It's pretty easy. Do you have a doctors note? Are you caring for someone disabled? Do you have a list of places you've applied for work and been turned down and have been consistently applying?

If you answer "no" to those three questions, you are someone who will not work. Of course, honesty and integrity have to factor in as well, but that is not as easily determined.
