"You are a consumer you vote everyday." - Eddie Vedder

Come out on Sunday and attend a peaceful rally of Long Islanders.

“You can’t stand neutral on a moving train” – Howard Zinn

This quote from one of our nation’s finest educators speaks sharper now then ever before in my lifetime. With all that is erupting in our country; corporate welfare, the failing educational system, two ten year wars, the ever widening economic gap, the aggressive tea party movement… it is our responsibility to act. We, as a people, need to accept that inaction is no longer an acceptable reaction. As social workers committed to justice it is paramount that we stand with those who now stand for us. While the media minimizes and editorializes Occupy Wall Street by suggesting the movement has no focus, no demands, and that those protesting are scattered with multiple causes… my mother would argue, “everything is connected” all of these issues share one common bond, they benefit the top 1% at the expense of the bottom 99%.

“Power concedes nothing without a demand it never has and it never will” – Frederick Douglas

It is fair to assume that we all have full schedules, however, it is our exhaustion (working multiple jobs, raising families) and distraction (the jersey shore, the ALDS) that allows the 1% to stay in power… that allows our politicians to dismiss us.

You realize Pearl Jam is part of the 1%?

  • "You realize pearl jam is part of the 1%"

... I think that you were trying to make a point that you didn't quite make.

If my assumption is correct you are suggesting that because the individual members of pearl jam are financial successful (that they are part of the top 1% of earners in the USA) my post lacks relevance on this page? That just seems silly as well as offensive to the band who have collectively and individually worked restlessly in both their professional and artistic practice to advocate on behalf of the subjugated and hold accountable the actions of tyrants.

    "Can't wait for election day.
    Witness the occupation.
    Corporations rule the day.
Well you know the pendulum throws.
Farther out to the one side swinging.
Has to sweep back the other way.
    The world has come undone.
Another day and who can wait.
    Change don't come at once.
It's a wave, building before it breaks.
All this hope and nowhere to go.
This is how I used to feel but no more.

This was no disrespect to you or PJ. It's hard to pin fault on anyone but the 1% that are making themselves visible at the Occupy events. The Michael Moores, Russell Simmons, Kanye Wests......Get my point.

    i understand your point.
it is what those types do......so they do not come knocking on their door.
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.

So, because you like PJ, words outweigh action? Yes, they have done some nice things. A lot of the 1% have done nice things and not needed the publicity that PJ has gotten. How many folks at OWS have they employed since it started? Because those folks want their money.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

maybe i am misreading your post, but it sounds to me like you are saying pearl jam needs publicity for it's good works? i think it is insulting those 6 guys if that is indeed what you are implying. they are a world famous band, of course anything they do is going to draw some sort of attention. i doubt their charitable efforts are some sort of an attention seeking ego thing...

    :clap::clap::clap:

    Agreed,

This 1% argument is week. This OWS effort is beginning to get dangerous. There are rapes, underage runaways, TB in Atlanta. It is becoming a Health Hazard. This has nothing to do with PJ but they are in the 1%, doesn't make them right or wrong. My problem again is with the Michael Moore's prancing around the protest, heck, they have enough money, give them a job.

That was not what I said.
