could this happen in 2011, or in the future at all? i have my doubts sadly. i get it, im as reliant on youtube for checking out live performances of my favorite bands as everyone else. and i get having a cool picture you took at the gig of your favorite band on your phone is cool. but i also have never had any interest, in, being at a show, and seeing it live, and simitaneously filming it on my phone. you see that at every gig. someone with their hand in the air, iphone in hand filming.

i was at a ryan adams show last month, and found it really interesting and satisfying that he specified that no pictures would be taken of him, and all phones would be shut off, and not used for any purpose. he even had this funny introduction before he came on stage, him i assume, voice altered saying the ushers would be forced to sacrifice anyone who took pictures or used their phone during the show.

Someones phone did ring during the show, but other than that i never heard or saw any phones. that said the venue and crowd were about half and half older folks and young people.

Is it possible to go to a show or see a show and not see that?

EV's shows in Oz(not sure about US shows) were no pictures or filming allowed & the ushers told you to put it away if they saw one, until Hard Sun at the end where everyone got them out but yeah in a way it was cool no bloody phones & cameras in front of you.

  • It's gonna happen at any show now a days. I do it too but I'm respectful and like to basically tape the intro's/1st song (The Flaming Lips recording of their show two weeks ago I got is amazing) and then put it away and just take in the whole experience. I'll snap a few photos here or there and be done. Unless you're the Pixies, then I took a MASS amount of photos (by my standards, I saw people taping and snapping all night).
  • as i said, i get it, and benefit as we all do by those who take pictures of shows and get audio of shows that its not possible for me to attend. thats cool

but theres something bizaare to me about those who spend good money on a show, to hear music that has enriched their lives, and instead of living in the moment and taking in this beautiful art being performed in front of you, they are looking at the show from behind a camera, and are checking their phone for how its turning out. i find that strange and more than a little unsettling and disturbing.

I can't wait for the day when iPhones are replaced by iPads at concerts.
