I only sorta know his biggest hits and any live video I see posted here or anywhere his voice n piano is just amazing...Are there any albums which stand out being the best?

He was awesome on Black Gives Way To Blue

P.s. I have everything ;)

Thank you for any help.

Personally, I love Good-Bye Yellow Brick Road. The whole album is really unique, and the song itself is so dream-like. :)

Early Elton is my favorite Elton. 1970's Elton John is one of my essential must haves and it's his second album. His third Tumbleweed Connection is also fantastic. Greatest Hits 1970-2002 may also give you a general overview.

I only have a greatest hits collection: rocket man/; number ones. Pretty good overview of his work.

A buddy in college had tumbleweed connection and it was a good album. I enjoyed it. Sorry if this wasn't much help. But Tumbleweed connection is a good album.

I like Madman Across The Water. It's a pretty solid album.

  • Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is his masterpiece. It wouldn't hurt starting there.

Give Honky Chateau a listen, it too is a marvelous record. I would say that or Madman.

Start with the self-titled and end with the 2nd greatest hits. If you go further, that'll just tarnish what you've just had the pleasure of discovering.

Personally I like Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy but I think if you go with any of his early 70's stuff you'll enjoy it.
  • TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION!

    Hands down.
  • Oh, and from the same era "11-17-70" is an excellent live album...very high energy and very minimalist. Just piano, bass and drums. The first time I heard it, I said it sounded like Cream with piano replacing the guitar.

Early stuff is the best. Try finding his box set... you can usually pick these up used for a decent price. Good live album to get would be Live in Melbourne (with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) -- Love the version of Candle in the Wind on this one.

I've noticed everyone has said early stuff..what happened to him...was it the 80s or early he went wrong or something?

I listened to that live 11.12.70 album, its ace. Just finished Connections and Elton John, now on Yellow.

Could anyone recommend me songs that they think are equally as powerful as Candle In The Wind? It's just so damn powerful!

Tiny Dancer (my fave... from as early as hearing it on WKRP in Cincinnati), Levon, Bad Side of the Moon, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting... so many good early stuff (including Crocodile Rock and Don't Go Breaking my Heart).

I don't think his 80's stuff is necessarily bad, but he definitely toned down the stage antics and took a more family friendly and soundtrack oriented turn. I still love 'Sad Songs Say So Much' and his version of Pinball Wizard. Side note: A few years back at a PJ Show in Seattle, Brad opened and played 'Benny and the Jets,' Which was AWESOME. Definitely seek it out

SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT. If you haven't already listened to it. Written after he was married, realized he was gay, and tried to commit suicide. My favorite Elton song. The rest of his career is just as heralded. He became Capt. Fantastic. If you haven't seen Tommy- watch it. It's a musical film from Elton and The Who base on The Who's 1969 rock opera musical album.
  • Some good picks previous, but my 2 fave albums are 1973s 'Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player" and 1983s 'Too Low For Zero'.
