Well I'm truly happy that you have a great job & I applaud you for wanting to do the right thing. Based on the information you've given, though, I don't see any evidence that this manager has committed a crime & it seems like a pretty big leap to assume she has.

Australians aren't familiar with the term "throw another shrimp on the barbie"?

Actually, "throw another shrimp on the barbie" is a catchphrase used by Paul Hogan in an Australian tourism marketing campaign, marketed specifically to the Americans in the 1980's. Australians don't really use the term shrimp at all - we have various sizes of prawns, the smaller could be referred to as shrimp, but aren't normally. Because Americans use the word shrimp, I believe the Australian Tourism people decided that you all weren't bright enough to realise if he said 'throw another prawn on the barbie', he was referring to shrimp, or really any kind of crustacean. Hence the catchphrase that everyone in America knows, but no one in Australia says.

Brilliant :clap: ... I have never heard an Australian here say this either

You can earn $85k/yr as middle management at a grocery store? damn...I'm in the wrong line of business.
  • Yeah... too much assumption, hearsay and other anecdotal evidence to make this debate anything more substantial than an e-mail forward.

And what is wrong with buying $600 worth of shrimp? You can do a lot of things with shrimp... You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich.

    That- that's about it.

    very good

We have much fraud here, a few news stations have delved into the situation
and people sell/trade their food stamps/cards for other stuff.

Personally we could have reported some who lie about income and their expenses
but really would rather not get involved. Never know these days how violent some might get
especially since they believe they are above the law and the govt owes them something.

I have been making this commentary for a long time... the problem isn't necessarily the government... it's the people.
It is people who cheat the Food Stamp program... that is there to help those Americans who really and truely need our help. It is people (including doctors and lawyers) who cheat the Medicare system. Workers who cheat on Workman's Compensation claims. It was people who lied about losing things in Katrina that scammed the system put in place to help those who lost everything.
Are government programs run inefficiently? Yes. Does that mean it's okay for some old fuck to cheat the system, file a Medicare claim to get a motorized wheelchair from an unscrupulous, sleazy wheelchair salesman... then, sell the wheelchari on Craig's List? It's the fucking cheating people that do that shit.

You are so right it is the people, and they are no better than the people that reach the 1% income level by cheating or working the system.
The cashier has now gone over the store manager’s head to the District manager. I am worried about her. She seems to be getting the cold shoulder from the food stamp manager (Assistant store manager) and the Store manager (the one she told first about it). I am going to wait and see how this plays out since she has gotten herself in the middle of this. If I report it to the welfare fraud line, I am afraid they will blame her. Funny thing is she dates a cop and he is telling her to stay out of it. :?

What did you end up doing aerial? Are you staying out of it or did you anonymously report the manager?

It's all a slippery slope, isn't it, doing the right thing. One thing I've learned from working in a corporate environment is that "doing the right thing" to the execs means "if you don't mind your own business, you're out of a job", because everyone cheats, and doing the right thing means consequences to all. Sorry to hear this, but the bottom line seems to be that everyone cheats and getting away with it is imperative. Makes me sick.

The cashier told higher management but he says there is nothing he can do about what she does outside of work.
I feel this is one of the many reasons America is in such a mess.

Should she be reported? What would you do?

By the way, we see this all the time from customers. Last week I was behind a person buying two live lobsters. Total was $43. He paid with food stamps.

I think one of the reasons this country's in such a mess is because people think they know other people's business. But they don't.

What's the real issue here, anyway? That a person who makes $85,000/year & has no kids has food stamps? But you don't necessarily know with absolute certainty that any of these three things is actually true. There are true & untrue rumors about people's salaries at all work places. Even if her salary was publicly posted at some point, it could have changed. And even if she doesn't have kids, she could have acquired some dependents that you don't know about. And, more likely, she probably doesn't even have food stamps. For all you know, she has a paraplegic cousin with 10 kids who can't do her own grocery shopping so she has this manager pick up groceries for her when she goes to work. You said she bought her own lunch with the food stamps the other day, but maybe her cousin (or whoever the food stamps belong to) owed her. Or maybe she's stealing lunch from her cousin, which is between them.

Or is the problem that she bought $600 worth of shrimp & you don't think that's a good use of food stamps? But it's not for you to decide how people spend their food stamps. If you think there should be a ban or limit on buying shrimp, then take it up with the federal government.

Or is the problem that she's using the food stamps at work? But, as the other manager already said, how she legally pays for groceries at a public grocery store has nothing to do with her job.

So if you, personally, have actual proof that she has committed a crime, then by all means turn her in. But I'd first consider the possibility that y'all are just a bunch of busy-bodies who don't have enough work to do.

Wow, it sounds as if someone is harbouring some sort of guilt!

This thread delivers on all the right levels. Moral commentary AND crustacean debate.

To wrap up the OT portion of the threat -- prawns and shrimp are not the same. It may be that Aussies call prawns what we in the US call shrimp, but biologically they are different animals. In terms of texture and taste, what Americans call prawns are more like small lobsters than big shrimp. Furthermore, although shrimp can certainly be very small, I've seen shrimp that were substantially larger than your average prawns. It's the basis of the classic American oxymoron -- "jumbo shrimp".

And that's all I have to say about that.

I am waiting to see what happens to the girl.

The cashier was taken in the office two days ago with two managers. The big manager said there are questions that HR needed answers to. Seems they want to turn this in to a racial problem since the manager that used them is black and the cashier is white. Of course, it has nothing to do with race. She was just trying to do the right thing. They also wanted to act as if she was the only one talking about this when there is more cashiers conversing about it every time she would go thru there line.

A little history. The cashiers that are not full time are being screwed by the corp. They have recently hired more cashiers so that they do not have to pay top pay to the cashiers that have earned it over the years. They cut there hours big time and are giving it to the new cashiers who do not earn as much money. New policy is no more full time for cashiers. One of the reasons we have part time cashiers that have work for us for many years is they were all waiting for the full time position. Guess it is called doing business.

Therefore, I am sure this is why there has been talk between them. They cannot make a living and yet here is this person making a great salary but using food stamps.

I know I posted before what a good place this is to work, but I see it changing VERY SLOWLY. I am hoping it is just because of the economy because I would hate to see it turn into just another greedy corp.

That's why America sucks. Don't get me wrong, not saying the whole place is bad, but you guys don't have the awards and legislation we do to protect workers. Over here, they would never get away with that. We have award wages for I think pretty much all industries - retail is pretty average, and a casual employee (one who's hours are not fixed), gets higher hourly pay than full time or part time, but full time and part time workers get sick pay and holiday pay. Everyone gets superannuation (money on top of your wage that the employer has to pay into an account for your retirement basically). Also, everyone gets a CPI increase each year - not much, but it means you can't be working somewhere for 10 years and still be on the same pay. With retail, the awards start at age 15/16 and increase each year until you are 21, then that's the top award, but within that there are differing structures according to your position within the company - ie, higher retail responsibilities earn you more money, and obviously assistant manager and manager are on higher pay still. But at $22.50 an hour for an adult retail weekdays, slightly more for Saturdays, time and half for Sundays and double time for public holidays, you can understand why I say America sucks. :? :?

With retail, the awards start at age 15/16 and increase each year until you are 21, then that's the top award, but within that there are differing structures according to your position within the company - ie, higher retail responsibilities earn you more money, and obviously assistant manager and manager are on higher pay still. But at $22.50 an hour for an adult retail weekdays, slightly more for Saturdays, time and half for Sundays and double time for public holidays, you can understand why I say America sucks. :? :?

Oh my good God, I'm moving to Australia!! And I really hope your great place to work doesn't turn into just another shit place like so many others, aerial.
