Feels like I am the only one... especially at my age. A little young for it...

Wondering what permanent changes you had to make in your lifestyle... what meds work... how bad you feel from blood pressure meds... blood thinners...

Recently had a full physical including EKG. The EKG revealed a past heart event, unsure how bad or what it was exactly. Likely while high on crack. Believe I know which night too. Having said that , I'm incredibly fortunate that otherwise I'm healthy. BP is normal, cholesterol is within normal ranges. Frankly I'm stunned , given how I lived previous to getting sober.

So to answer your question BD, I've done nothing specific related to my "event".

You WILL develop whatever new habits wil benefit not just your heart but other health aspects as well.

  • first of all, happy to hear you are on the mend!! here's to a speedy, healthy recovery and a long life :)
i have not had a heart attack. but, i have been having chest pains for a long time, more than six months, so i finally asked my doctor about them (they are not in the center of my chest-they are to the left around my breast). they did an ekg, and it was abnormal. i was referred to a cardiologist, so 3 days before my 36th bday next week, that's what i get to do, woo-hoo! the doc said that the ekg wasn't too concerning, but because of my family history, which is pretty bad when it comes to heart issues, they want me to see a specialist. i'm a little nervous-nervous enough to be trying to quit smoking, which is really hard. but i am trying, and have cut down signifigantly. i am not even a heavy smoker (i don't even know what qualifies as that to be honest, but i don't go through a pack a day or anything like that), but i have been smoking off and on for years so obviously i am concerned. so, i am chewing alot of gum and trying to figure out what else there is to do in the car while on long drives lol...

Thanks man... Yeah I went cold turkey (I smoked way more than a pack) and it's been 6 weeks... Can't see myself picking it up after that scare...
Hopefully you caught on to something early... and meds can handle it...
Good luck and if you have any cardiologist or question about the meds... don't hesitate...

I have not had a heart attack, but a friend of mine had one and was told that if she didn't stop smoking, she would definitely have another one, and soon. She quit, and lived for a very long time after that. So kudos, Black Diamond, for kicking the habit!

  • in a nutshell...

    1. Start off light cardio..slowly work your way up to harder stuff....

    2. heart healthy cook book (I have one from the AHA...I'll send it this weekend)

2a. Use the Heart Healthy Cookbook. ;)

    3. Monitor your blood pressure. (I have a machine...I'll send that along too) Keep a log
bring it with you to the docs on check ups.

    4. Talk to Kara's mom (will include the phone number in with the stuff) I'll tell her that you'll be calling.

and, as much as it pains me to say it ,... 5. Cut back on the alcohol...(jesus did I really just say that...I feel like I just cheated on my best friend, lol)

Wishing you all the best Adam, I was shocked when I heard this happen to you. Quitting smoking has been an on going battle for myself as well. It's harder to stop when Im boozing.

Such a gross habit, should have listened to mom when she said never to pick up those fucking things.

Sometimes it sux to hear the phrase " it happens for a reason"
But maybe this will set you up for the back 9 of your life being smoke free ;)

    Jk about back 9 comment
  • I have not had a heart attack...however

I cannot recommend this book enough.

If your struggling w/ quitting smoking, please read this book.
I quit March 2010 - was smoking at least 1 pack a day for the last 13 years or so...more on weekends or when drinking. (im only 28 so thats like half my life still!)

I'll keep posting a link to this book until someone here actually reads it 8-)

You can do it!!! Smoking and stress are so bad for you! Now, if i could just find a good book that would help me deal w/ the stress part, i'd have nothing to worry about.

Congratulations on your progress on giving up the smokes so far Adam. Cold turkey is brutal! I applaud you  But if you need help - read the book ;)8-)

  • Sorry for butting in... ;)

I've read nothing but sound advice so far. No experience with heart attacks but we went through a similar episode last year. Hubby has a chronic lung disease, he's 48 now. In Feb '10 things got so bad, he ended up in ICU for two weeks. I don't need to tell you that was a bit of an eye-opener... He had to cut out a lot of things and of course those were all the things that make life fun and interesting. He nearly slipped into a depression but we got him help for that.

Keep in mind that changing your lifestyle is a process. Your body AND mind have to get used to this new situation. Especially in a case like yours, when you're "forced".

*cliché ahead* You've had a warning but you're still young (-ish ;) ). With a bit of perseverance your body will restore itself, your energy levels will be through the roof and you can ditch those meds.

EDIT : ignore the bacon advice!

Best wishes Adam. I have no experience of heart issues, but I have had experience of life changing health problems, including having to take powerful and debilitating meds, where I've had to totally change my lifestyle, and really start to piece a new life together from the bottom up. It doesn't equate to your situation, but some parts might be similar.... It's a real challenge, but from these experiences I have become a firm believer in 'recovery' - in the amazing capacity for humans to recover, and adapt to a new routine. It was sometimes hard during that period for me to imagine that things were ever going to improve, but given time with the new regime, the support and morale of friends, family, music, taking things steadily...... things improved immeasurably over time. I wish you all the best right now.
