Cory Smoot, longtime guitarist for GWAR known as Flattus Maximus, was found dead by his bandmates Nov. 3 as GWAR was preparing to cross the border into Canada.
Frontman David Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, issued a statement to Metalsucks that there was no word on the cause of death at press time.
“At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long-term plans,” Brockie said, adding the band members “are just dealing with the loss of our friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today.”

They just played in Chicago on Halloween. I was so tempted to go, but sticking around for the trick-or-treating thing is kind of a big deal when your kids are 3, 5 and 7.
I have tickets to see them on November 12 & 13. I'm actually going twice because of the opening band, Every Time I Die, but I was still excited to check out a GWAR set. I remember seeing them on Jerry Springer as a kid thinking 'what the fuck?!?' and now now listening to some of their stuff and actually able to comprehend it. They have some pretty humorous stuff.
The best part was Pete Lee (who was Flattus Maximus at the time) came up to me without any of the costume stuff on after the show while we were out back waiting and said "How do you think we sounded tonight?" I was like... We? So like a dumbass I had to ask him who he was and he said he's Flattus Maximus. It was funny, then I said "Not to make myself sound even more stupid, but is there any other band members out here?" He said yeah that guy, that guy, and that guy. Hahahaha. I had no idea who any of them were without the costumes. It was one of the coolest nights of my life.
I also learned that night to never let a member of GWAR take a picture of you with another member. I gave my camera to Casey Orr (Beefcake the Mighty and later in Burden Brothers) and before he took the picture for me he pulled his pants out a little and pointed the camera down his pants and took a picture of his junk. I still have the picture to this day hahaha.

i've been to a club after they played city gardens, trenton NJ, and there was blood splattered on the ceiling...
sad to lose a creative monster...maybe another will rise again...
hard to imagine with today's music...but what do I know...
The club they always play in Cincinnati, Bogarts, the walls always have a slight red tint to them from all the blood.

A spokesperson for the band confirmed to MTV News on Friday that the tour will continue as scheduled and that additional information about the group's plans will be released later in the day.
That's pretty crazy that they're going to continue the tour. I guess that's a plus to being in a band full of characters like that, they can be replaced.

Anyway, at first I was pretty surprised that they didn't cancel the tour, but as I thought about it, it dawned on me that they'd stand to lose a lot of money if they did pull the plug. I don't know a whole lot about the band's financial situation, but I'd imagine they're in no position to absorb those kinds of losses (the way, say, Pearl Jam was able to in 2000).
And this is a complete cliche, but I'd bet that Cory would have wanted them to go on.

Roger,
Yeah, they did a few times. Dave Brockie mentioned how Flattus left us to go back to his own planet. We miss him, and it's fucked up. In one of the songs, (don't know GWAR's catalog real well), Dave started growling Flattus why the fuck did you leave us, why the fuck did you leave us. He also said "it's been a tough time, but thanked all of us for being cool, and showing support to the rest of the band.

That's really cool. I still can't believe that they are back to touring so quickly. I'm assuming there's a new member who replaced Maximus?

Wow that's some rough shit right there. I had been wondering if they were going to say anything at the shows or if they would just stay in character the whole time as usual.

Been looking over YouTube for some videos and found this one:

From Portland, Brockie is performing with the Oderus costume and says some cool stuff about Flattus.
