I was talking about this with a buddy from work today, anyone remember the top 500 countdown on WNEW that always ended on July 4th. I used to look forward to this every year, such great memories. I'm currently listening to the spiritual successor to the Firecracker 500, Q104.3's annual Top 1043 Classic Rock Songs of All Time Thanksgiving-week countdown. Earlier in the countdown (which started on Tuesday morning and is currently up to No. 78), one of the DJs commented that Pearl Jam fans had "shown up" in the voting this year. The biggest example I've seen yet of this is that "Better Man," which was No. 859 last year, came in at No. 91 this year. No other song yet played in this year's top 100 was even outside the top 200 last year, let alone the top 800.

Incidentally, the aforementioned No. 78 is Pearl Jam-adjacent: "Magic Man" by Heart. (EDIT: This song was also well outside the top 200 last year. Maybe it was Seattle that "showed up" for this New York-based countdown.)

Yes and no. The original Firecracker 500 was on WNEW. The Top 1,043 countdown that I'm referencing is on WAXQ 104.3.

"Alive" ended up in the top 40. That was the highest-placing Pearl Jam song. It was way up from where it was last year.

The list you're quoting is from 1996.

This year's list had two Metallica songs in the top 100. (See my post two spots above.) Anyway, this is as-voted-by-listeners so you get what you get. I definitely heard "Jailhouse Rock" earlier in the countdown this year.

Ahhh ok.  I guess as we get older the olderish songs go. But having the Beatles and no Beach Boys is unusual.

Not 1 Elvis, Beach Boys or Metallica song in the top 100?
The list you're quoting is from 1996.

This year's list had two Metallica songs in the top 100. (See my post two spots above.) Anyway, this is as-voted-by-listeners so you get what you get. I definitely heard "Jailhouse Rock" earlier in the countdown this year.
Ahhh ok.  I guess as we get older the olderish songs go. But having the Beatles and no Beach Boys is unusual.
I wasn't able to listen to the entire countdown, so I can't state with authority that the Beach Boys are nowhere on it, but they definitely didn't make the top 100. I'd have "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" in my personal top 100 (comfortably), but I didn't vote.

As great and as influential as the Beach Boys are/were (including on the Beatles), the Beatles stand alone in terms of popularity and influence across multiple generations of rock listeners. The station that runs this countdown still runs "Breakfast with the Beatles" every Sunday morning, as do other classic-rock stations around the U.S. There's no equivalent for the Beach Boys.

In this countdown, 91 of the songs were by the Beatles' members, either as a group or in their post-Beatles careers. I think the runner-up was Led Zeppelin with 48 appearances.

Wouldn't it be nice is a top 10 all time for me.  Should never be out of that.

I have found that these lists are just like Rolling Stone Magazines lists other than the lack of Beach Boys songs, to be very Beatles heavy.

The Beatles are, objectively speaking, the biggest band in rock history, so that's how it's going to be.

One thing that differentiates this list from many of the Rolling Stone lists is that the RS lists are usually created by a relatively small number of people, whereas this one is voted on by tens of thousands of people. It's a pretty good snapshot of what classic-rock fans like.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

That would make more sense.  I always thought RS was biased.  Like Metallica sells out stadiums around the world but they don't have a song in the top 20 yet Master of Puppets is considered a masterpiece and did win Album of the year by a few publications.

Well, I mean any subjective list will be biased. It's pretty much the definition of subjective. The listener-voted list is biased, too; it's just that the bias gets watered down the more people you have contributing. There's probably still a level of bias in the listener-voted list (e.g., the voters probably skew disproportionately to a certain age cohort).

You know what.  How many younger kids put on the radio and are voting?

Well, there definitely aren't a lot of kids listening to classic-rock radio, that is for sure, unless they're listening to it in their parents' car.

Not 1 Elvis, Beach Boys or Metallica song in the top 100?
And not 1, but 2 Alanis Morrissette songs. How ironic.
Again, though, that list was from 1996. Alanis did not make the top 100 in 2024.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

I was talking about this with a buddy from work today, anyone remember the top 500 countdown on WNEW that always ended on July 4th. I used to look forward to this every year, such great memories. I've never been a fan of the song (or of the artist) but, if there was ever a time, it was 1996.
