whenever i'm at a PJ show (or really any show in general) i aways guess what the opening song is...like back in the 06 tour...me and my bro guessed and i guess severed hand and he guessed corduroy...the first song was severed and the second was corduroy...it was pretty funny (but more of a "you had to be there situation")...so yeah do any of you try to guess the opening song? if so, what's your record?

i'm 1 out of 2

I don't think I've ever just guessed it right.

However, with just a couple 'touches' to the guitar, I can usually tell which song is coming up.. i don't know music terminology very well... but the sound from the feedback of the guitar... usualy gives it away for me... it might be because i've listen to every song like a million times...

I wanted either Can't Keep or Breakerfall to open in Hartford..... What were the first 2 songs played? Can't Keep and then Breakerfall. I got really lucky, god that show was amazing.

  • The first time I saw Bob Dylan (2001) he was playing a pretty much identical setlist every night. I impressed everyone around me when I would guess every song before he played it. I got like 95% of them right. It was fun being predictible....

    and a great show!

haha i did that with Rush...they played the same set list...and my friend looked up the set list from the first show and put it as a playlist on his ipod...when we were wondering what the next song was, we reffered to his ipod...and then one of the videos introducing "tom Sawyer" was southpark and they sang the wrong lyrics...and us having seen it before and watched it numerous times since then, we knew all the lyrics..."a modernday warrior today's TOM SAWYER! he floated down a river on a raft with a black guy!" (the real lyrics are, "a modern day warrior mean mean stride, today's tom sawyer mean mean pride" or something like that)

anywho sry for the Rush story...this is a PJ community

I don't know the exact number of times...but I started guessing the first song maybe my fourth concert...I only got it right once. The part that i find humorous is that the song I pick turns out to be the second song...go figure :)

I guessed both MSG openers this summer - Hard to imagine and Release.

in 2007 I guessed the Long road Copenhagen opener.

The other shows I was completely wrong....

  • I go to about 50 shows a year and guess at every show. I only remember getting it right once. When Springsteen opened with Atlantic City at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, I nailed that one.

yeah the guy i went with to the first MSG 08 show was like "I REEEALLLLYYYY WANNA HEAR HARD TO IMAGINE!!!" like he was like really emphasizing that point...and what do you know? first song they played that night...FUCKIN KICK ASS SHOW!
  • From my experience, at non-Pearl Jam shows many bands tend to open with the title track to their newest album. And if there's no title track, track 1 of their newest album is often played first.

    2 for 2.

Guessed Go as show opener in Berlin ´06 and Sometimes as the opener in Munich ´07.

i always think im gonna know what song is first. Im usually completely wrong. One that I nailed, probably the only one, was Ottawa 05 with Wash.

I will try to guess opening songs at shows. I knew Long Road would be the opener at the 2004 Toledo show when I heard Neil was there. At the London Ontario show in 2005 I told those around me that I thought the opener would start with an O, and hoped it would be Oceans (which it was). Although I actually thought it would be Of the Girl.

My wife & I often listen for familiar riffs when the road crew is tuning instruments before the show. Not necessarily just to guess the opening song, but also for a preview of other songs that the band plans to play that night.
  • I called Can't Keep in Hartford, and I called Garden to open the 1st encore.
  • I called Hard to Imagine at Roo last summer, ask my wife

first time I've ever been right though because I usually always call out a Lost Dogs song
    the Minions

For 6/30 Mansfield, this guy next to me said "Watch, they will open with Wash tonight." And sure enough, they did open with Wash that night. For some reason, I usually get Long Road or Release for most of the shows I attend. No complaints though. I was just out of my mind when they opened with Can't Keep at Hartford too.
