Asking for good ear thoughts.

Having never done anything like this, I'm a bit nervous writing this... but I'm asking for you good thoughts for my ears.
I already have a lot of damage to my hearing- hyperacusis (and it's attending phonophobia) and tinitus that creates quite a racket 24/7. But now as of yesterday the tinnitus in my left ear sound like a crew of sheet metal workers hard at work trying to turn off a smoke dectector and my hearing in that ear has suddenly diminshed at certain frequencies (say what?) and yet are still sensitive to high pitches and loudness (I suspect this is what is technically referred to as "hearing loss recruitment). I'll be seeing a specialist Thursday. Meanwhile, it's pin and needles and ping ping ping in my ears.

Thanks, friends.

I’ve been reading about tinnitus for years, it’s what’s keeping Pete Townshend off the stage these days.

Best of luck to you, hopefully the doctors can alleviate your problems.

brianlux, I realize this is an old thread, but what happened when you went for that Thursday appt in October?
I'm curious, I've been to the specialist twice and the audiologist twice (but it was over 2 yrs ago) and my ringing and tinnitus are worse. It would appear that that one of their tests made me worse but I never told the audiologist. Or maybe it was the Soundgarden concert we went to. The audiologist attributed my mild hearing loss in both ears due to concerts (since 1975), so I wonder if it is even worth going back to them.

I think I'm getting depressed from staying away from concerts. So, I bought tix to see Slash in May. Don't know how I'll tolerate Myles Kennedy's high pitched voice. My husband was an GNR fan back in the day, then we saw Slash with Velvet Revolver 3x.

I've been wearing earplugs from 10 yrs I think, maybe longer. I think I need ear muffs at concerts but my husband would pretend he doesn't know me probably.

Yikes the thought of this always scares me. I never wear earplugs (I know, I know!), and with all the concerts I go to what with my hubby being in like 4 bands and a concert promoter, I feel like I'm a major candidate for tinnitus.

Hope everything works out for you both brianlux and iluvcats!

Thanks for good thoughts and good vibes everybody!

ilovecats, to answer your question, my ear specialist told me the usual- watch my exposure to loud sound, relax, hang in there- the same thing I've heard for years!

My best advice for ear protection is to wear ear plugs at loud events. This is a real bummer to say though because I know that music sounds better without the muffling of plugs. At the risk of sounding like an old fart (or what George Carlin used to call "an old f*ck") I do wish bands would lower the volume a bit. I saw Paul Westerberg and His Only Friends a few years ago and did so because he rarely tours and I'm a big fan but I had to wear ear plugs AND industrial head phones and step out for sound breaks. On the other hand I saw Willie Nelson and Family a few years ago and actually was able to listen without ear plugs. The sound was great- plenty loud enough to hear every note but no pain! Wonderful!

Those are the only two shows I've been to in the last 20 years. Thankfully I saw many greats when I was young. My biggest regret- I've never seen Pearl Jam live. :(

    :o That's criminal right there.

I also wish PJ would turn it down a bit to be quite honest. The past tour in 2010 was loud! :?

    :?

I know- it's true! I should be locked up! But if they come to Sacramento and I can get tickets, I'm bringing a pocket full of ear plugs and paint PJ targets and arrows on my headphone! :D

  • This is one of my worst fears. I love going to concerts but they are all to loud. I've been wearing earplugs since I was 19, after I had 3 days of ringing in my ears after a STP concert. I always take shit from people about wearing them but I always wear them. I keep a case in my car so I'm never with out.
I hope it is getting more bearable for you.

I wear these. They say they are for swimming, but they are fabulous for loud concerts. It takes the volume down, but the sound is crystal clear. Made by Flent and about $3 a pair.

As for the tinnitus, they now have hearing aids that can help with that. $$, I know, and what they do is put a different "noise" in your ears. But one that is more soothing or one that you can block out more.

Ringing is horrible. I work in an ENT office and i do hearing tests on so many people with tinnitus. Some just find out all the info they can, even overseas and try anything and everything. I fel for you and hope you can find some relief.

I think it's because there is a tiny hole at the tip of each one. And they are comfy. made of soft pliable silicone.

I heard quiet recently. It was amazing. I had less caffeine that morning. Black Diamond has told me that before, to abstain from caffeine.

I'm going to order some of the Flent ear plugs. Where do you buy them?
