Severed hand - a song about using drugs responsibly?

Was listening to Severed Hand today and it summed up how I feel about drugs. I used to take harder drugs and it fucked me up for a few months. I still smoke pot every couple of days and take E very occasionally.

The first half of the song describes taking a trip and the damage it creates for your loved ones (leave your lady on the cement floor...leave yourself behind). Drugs can take you to isolated, egoistic spaces that sever your ties to the sober reality. Drugs have the power to make you disregard the positive things in life that lead to healthy personal growth (e.g love or people). Maybe the lyric "Tried to walk found a severed hand recognised it by the wedding band" refers to pushing your beloved away, and only realizing after they have left.

The second half on the other hand is a different story. "Understand I'm not falling down, look around the rooms taller now" is in reference to the the positives spaces you can find that lead to wisdom, weed can put things into perspective because when focused on correctly can bring metal freedom. "I see the sound in waves...lets me stay calm". You can examine yourself from an outside perspective when your high. It's almost like writing strong feelings down in order to think about them rationally. But knowing when drugs are destroying your perspective is important too, hence: "'If I don't lose control, Explore and not explode."

Finally the lyrics "Like a tear (as in tearing paper not a crying tear) in all we know once dissolved we are free to grow what is human, what is more", show that drugs can lead to spirituality. Drug experience is like a religious leap of faith, you know and feel it's presence but it's not rational and can't be shared with people. It questions reality and life itself. It's obvious that religion is outdated but it brought communities together and filled a fundamental human need of being connected to something bigger than daily life. Drugs are perhaps one way to experience this feeling if they are used to explore not explode.

Anyway heres the lyrics...

Big man stands behind an open door
Said, leave your lady on the cement floor

got some kicks, want to take a ride?
I said, yeah!
take your pick, leave yourself behind
I said, yeah!

I've no fear but for falling down
So look out below I am falling now
Oh please understand I just need, my friend,
a way a way a way home

Tried to walk, found a severed hand
Recognized it by the wedding band

Said it's ok, do you want some more?
I said, yeah!
Said You'll see dragons after 3 or 4
I said, yeah!

Under stand I'm not falling down
I said, look around, the rooms taller now,
I can't close my eyes, cause I see the sound in waves
In waves, lets me stay calm

If I don't lose control
Explore and not explode
A preternatural other plane
With the power to maintain

Like a tear in all we know
Once dissolved we are free to grow
What is human, what is more?
I'll answer this when I get home

  • I thought I read that it was about psychotropics (psych meds). That makes sense also.
If I knew where it was, I would take you there....there's much more than this.

I guess I overstated my claim, somtimes I assume that the general consensus is not religious. I'm from New Zealand and there is no dominant religion here. I am mostly refering to the various forms of Islamic and Chritian fundamentalist religions. It's sad that believers haven't learnt from the repeated bloodshed through history and present that an aspect of their belief is doing far more damage than good in the world. They aren't genuinly concerned for what happens on this earth and to the people in it because they are constantly focused on the world they will promoted to after they die.

I feel that religion is just a framework of metaphoric ideas to people that manages to explain the absurtdity of their own existance and makes them feel like their early actions mean something. I believe the same conclusions can be arrived at through other means such as philosophy and biology where ideas are found that are insights into the human condition.
