edited November 2008 in The Porch
Greetings,

I have coordinated a screening of Body of War in Toronto with the objective of bring awareness to the documentary as well as to the causes of Thomas Young and Eddie Vedder.

This is the movie that inspired Eddie to write the remarkably pertinent song 'No More'.

The event is for charity with all proceeds going to Iraq Veterans Against the War (http://www.IVAW.org).

- Event Details -
Date: November 11th (Remembrance Day), 2008
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor St W, Toronto)
Ticket Info: http://www.BodyOfWarToronto.com

- About the movie -
For those not familiar with this film, it is produced and directed by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro, and features two original songs by Eddie Vedder (No More). Body of War is a naked and honest portrayal of what it's like inside the body, heart and soul of this extraordinary and heroic young man.'

For more information please visit the film's website:
http://www.bodyofwar.com

- Charity -
This is a charity event with all proceeds going to Iraq Veterans Against the War (http://www.IVAW.org). IVAW has many ties locally to Toronto, specifically the funds raised will be going to support the legal cases of local war resisters that the US government is attempting to deport.

Historically the Canadian government has provided sanctuary to war resisters but something has changed with the current government that is in place and there is a legal battle going on daily to keep the resisters in Canada. If deported they will face jail time for not participating in a war that has been deemed illegal under international law.

- Last Points -
I have put forward the upfront costs for this event in the objective of brining awareness to this timely movie, the cause it supports and encouraging people to act. I respectfully ask that the PJ community support this cause by purchasing tickets or via donation.

Tickets and event information is available at http://www.BodyOfWarToronto.com, advanced tickets are selling for $11.00 (limited quantity available) and will be going up to $15.00. Donations can be made through the website.

Please forward this email to anyone that you think would be interested, and if you are interested in assisting with promoting the event don't hesitate to contact me as I have thousands of flyers, postcards and posters printed and ready for distribution.

I look forward to seeing you on the night of the event,
Andrew

  • I can't make it to Toronto, but good luck with it all.

I like your user name...is that a 'Pursued' reference, or a Bedouin Soundclash reference?

was fortunate enough to be at the premiere of Body of War at the Toronto International Film Festival. not only was the movie very powerful and moving, but we also got to meet Thomas in person. eV's performance after the movie was equally powerful and moving. oh yeah, eV was also kind enough to chat for a few minutes and sign our tamborines :)

i'll spread the word about your charity screening and defintely be there to see the movie again,...

  • Crap; I have class on Tuesday nights, or I would absolutely come. I saw the film at the film festival last year - well worth $11 or $15 for anyone who hasn't seen it yet!

In reference to share's comments about bars beforehand, I should mention that the facility is rented from 6-9pm.

We are going to start the film at 7pm and have Guest Speakers afterwards. The Guest Speakers have not been confirmed just yet, but IVAW will definitely be represented.

For the 6-7pm time slot, I am working on having some live music.

Does anyone know what time DBT is going on stage that night?

The plan is to show the movie at 7pm which means it will be done before 8:30, so for those going to DBT you probably can do both that night.

Also, I will be sending some event details shortly. We will probably have some live music at 6pm and perhaps some relevant footage shown leading up to 7pm. After the movie we will have a couple of speakers, people from IVAW as well as some others still to be confirmed.

I will post the details once they are finalized.

    Hey guys,

First off I have to say thanks to the Message Pit for all the attention it has driven to the Toronto screening of BOW. It is the number one source for our website's traffic.

Unfortunately, none of this traffic has been ended up in a transaction for tickets or a donation :(

Just to remind you, the proceeds are going to the local chapter of IVAW in Toronto who are using the funds for the War Resister Support Campaign, I encourage you to read about their stories: http://resisters.ca/index_en.html

Things are evolving with the screening and the awareness level is kicking into high gear. We will be postering with IVAW across Toronto this week. Also, I have been contacted by Edge 102 to appear on air for an interview to discuss the screening :) I will post the details once I have them but it looks like it will be Friday Oct 31st

There are a multitude of reasons to support this cause, I will highlight a few:
    - if you don't agree with the US\Canadian involvement in the War, proceeds go to IVAW which is one of the largest anti-war organization in North America and if you want to support further awareness and growth of their campaign.... then you should support this event

    - if you think the Canadian government should follow its own precedent by providing sanctuary and allow war resisters to remain in our country... then you should support this event

    - if you think Prime Minister Harper should follow public opinion and allow war resisters to remain in our country... then you should support this event

    - if you think Prime Minister Harper should follow a motion set by the Canadian Parliament which allows war resisters to remain in our country... then you should support this event

    - if you agree with Eddie's involvement with Body Of War... then you should support this event

    - if you want to see a damn good movie and want to take advantage of the opportunity to hear people speak of their experiences in Iraq... then you should support this event

A successful event will make a substantial difference in the lives of the war resisters and their campaign to remain in Canada. By raising the awareness of the war resister campaign enormous pressure will be put on the Canadian government to follow their own precedent, the will of their people, and the will of their Parliament which can attain the goal of stopping the deportation of war resisters.

One of the most effective contribution methods you can provide would be to forward the screening info out to your contact list, here is an evite link that you can use:
    http://64.34.52.140/BOW/bow_evite.html

or you can just point them to our website:
    http://bodyofwartoronto.com/

Any contribution will make a difference, trust me. I have been fortunate enough to meet local IVAW members in Toronto and hear their stories. These stories deserve proper media coverage and support, in its absence let's take things into our own hands and educate people.

Please help me make this event an overwhelming success, we can make a significant difference here on so many levels.....

I'd love to see this documentary again, especially to support a good cause like this one. It just falls on a bad night for me.

For those unsure of going it's only $11, and I doubt you'll be disappointed. You can buy the tickets on the site JebRand listed. And for those who prefer hard tickets or aren't Internet savvy Rotate This has them for $15. http://www.rotate.com/tickets.php

Hey Lukin, that is actually incorrect. They should be selling the tickets for $11, all the outlets should be selling at the advanced ticket price. I think they are confused by the price on the actual printed ticket ($15).

I will get things straightened out.

    Thanks
