So far my definite contenders would be:

Decemberists, Cave Singers, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs, Drive By Truckers, Bright Eyes, TV on the Radio, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Foo Fighters, Low Anthem, Ryan Adams, Wilco

Still to pick up:

Tom Waits, Jane's Addiction, Deer Tick, Laura Marling, Gillian Welch all of which I'm hoping will be contenders too...

Been a pretty good year :)

I would like to add the latest from St. Vincent as well. It really took me by surprise.

Some great albums listed. One more to add, which may be my overall favorite of the year:

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit ~ Here We Rest
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Not heard that one yet, also on the wanted list... how does it compare with Sirens?

Much better. I think w/ his other two discs he was trying to differentiate himself from the DBT. With Here We Rest he's still got his own sound, but the lonely southern feel is definitely back. The whole disc is strong, but there's a few tracks that are my favorites:

    Alabama Pines:

I think Dawes' album "Nothing Is Wrong" is my favorite of the year. Awesome album.

Also really like: Matthew Good, Delay Trees, Middle Brother, Bon Iver, Typhoon, Chamberlin & We Are Augustines.

I love My Morning Jacket but I was a bit disappointed with their album. A few real good songs but overall didn't love the album.

Will have to check this out, cheers.

So far (I'm assuming Mr Waits will feature in a later list!) I would say Wilco, Bill Callahan, Low, Ry Cooder and The Low Anthem would be vying for top spot.

    Album of the year:

Tom Waits- Bad as Me. I'm on my 2nd listen right now and it's blowing my mind. I'd say it's the best thing he's done since Mule Variations. The man is simply incapable of putting out a mediocre album, and with this record he proves once again that he's still the greatest songwriter alive today.

    Honorable mentions:

    R.E.M.- Collapse Into Now
    Cuff the Duke- Morning Comes
    Wilco- The Whole Love
    Screaming Trees- Last Words
    Foo Fighters- Wasting Light
    Arkells- Michigan Left
Social Distortion- Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes
    Ron Hawkins- Straitjacket Love
    Fleet Foxes- Helplessness Blues
    Feist- Metals
    Eddie Vedder- Ukulele Songs
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
