OK so I had a few credits left on emusic and decided to try out both bands...

I got Transatlanticism by Death Cab and Shutes Too Narrow by The Shins.

Got to say Death Cab have made a bigger impression a couple of listens in. Anything else worth checking out by either / both?

I like "Plans" by Death Cab...good record. The Shins are good too, but I've never liked them as much. If you want to go with them, I'd suggest "Oh, Inverted World."
    I LOVE MUSIC.

Trans to me is the best Death Cab album all the other ones paled in comparison.

I liked all three shins albums but if you already have Chutes Too Narrow i would get Oh Inverted World by the Shins

I've never listened to the Shins, but I agree with mfc2006...Plans is a great record!

  • two of my favorite bands of all time. i suggest you try out death cabs plans for their trans follow up death cab at their most commercial sounding, and then also try We Have the Facts, when they were on an indie label. death cab is amazing and ben gibbard one of the best lyricists of our generation.

the shins, i'd get the other two albums you dont have to complete the collection. The newest one 2007's Wincing the Night away definitely has a more electronic sound to it, but its still great, and then Oh Inverted World is what introduced everyone to the band, it has the classic Caring is Creepy and New Slang, which are both certifiable indie classics.

i dont think you can say one is better than the other. Two of the best bands to come out of the indie scene, and in terms of the modern indie sound, both are examples of bands that have gotten huge critical and commercial acclaim but still are making great music

the death cab discography is great. i love everything, but i think you have to decide what you like better. sort of grimy, more guitar rocking indie music which is trans and everything before that record, or if you like your death cab more commercial, and more poppy but still excellent, which is everthing post trans like plans, narrow stairs and Codes and Keys. Ben's written some of his best stuff post Trans, like Summer Skin, or Brothers on a Hotel Bed, Soul Meets Body all off Plans.

Just got done with a rant on the coldplay thread about how just because a band is mainstream and poppy it doesnt make them bad. same with death cab.
  • also james mercer, songwriter and lead singer for the shins is also a very underrated but one of the best lyricists of our generation as well. mercer has this way of, like ben gibbard, distilling these moments of truth and crisis, loss of identity, and faith and love, into succint and beautiful 3 minute songs. its actually pretty stunning. Songs like Spilt Needles and A Comet Appears both off Wincing the Night, or the aforementioned Caring is Creepy and new slang, you can sense james mercer has had some trouble finding his purpose in his life, which is just the type of music i love
  • trans is such a gorgeous record. really doesnt get much better in music than Title and Registration, The New Year, Tiny Vessels, A Lack of Color, Expo 86. those are some classic songs! Death cab is the perfect example of pop music being amazing.

Yeah really enjoying Trans - I'd add We Looked Like Giants & The Sound Of Settling to that list, I wouldn't take any away...
