  • It's a good album, maybe a few too many ballards though.

Fingers crossed for some Euro dates :D

+1 And I believe Mr. Waits is a ballad expert.

    Good interview here

Sadly it looks like he's not very into the idea of touring.

    heres the excerpt

Touring is not for him, he says, although he said the same thing nine years ago and changed his mind for the Glitter and Doom shows.

The glowing reviews were not enough to make him do it again, although he admits there were rewarding moments. "I don't know if 'enjoy' is the right word," he says of the experience. "On the road I feel like a travelling salesman. It made some money and balanced the budget. It was enlightening and uplifting and rewarding I guess."

This time, however, he's not for budging. "No, no, no, no, no," he says in mock agitation. "It's not in my contract. Maybe I'll set myself up in a theatre somewhere and make everybody go on the road to hear me. The music's free," he says spruiking the idea, "but we charge you for travel."

 I saw Rain Dogs Revisited in London this July and the show was very good, but I want to watch Mr. Waits performing his own compositions so bad.

not counting orphans, i think this is his strongest album since mule variations. it's similar to blood money, only better. i can hear bits and pieces of almost every album since swordfishtrombones (save bone machine and black rider) and maybe even a little heartattack and vine in there. but i think the most remarkable thing about bad as me is that it doesn't break new ground. and he really hasn't done that, stopped changing, since raindogs (which was basically swordfishtrombones II). maybe that's why i like it so much, he's figured out what he's best at so that's what he's gonna do. or maybe real gone was so subpar that i got tired of him trying to push the envelope. either way, i'm on my 7th listen and there isn't a song i'm tempted to skip yet.

Brilliant album! I've only had it for a couple of days and it's already become my favorite album of the year. Not a single dud on the entire thing. I wouldn't say he's abandoned the crazy experimentation of Real Gone ("Hell Broke Luce" is pretty wild). But he's definitely gone back to basics with this one, revisiting some of the styles from his past like jazz, blues, and rockabilly. In a way the album is kind of a synthesis of everything that came before it, and it works incredibly well.

This album is great. I'm thinking that with some more listens it has the potential to equal 'Mule Variations'.
  • Hell Broke Luce and New Years Eve are two fantastic tracks. Tom Waits has an incredible knack of making him sound like a fresh new act frequently. Long may he continue...

Agreed. It's been going through my head all week.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Obviously not a lot of Waits fans on this forum. I find that incredibly sad. Their loss. I guess we'll just keep him all to ourselves here in this little thread.

So I've had the new album for almost 2 weeks now, and it pretty much owns my life. Not a day goes by where I'm not listening to it. My favorite album of the year for sure.
