Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have split after 27 years of marriage. The future of Sonic Youth is in doubt.

    oh no. as much as i love thurstons last album, this is devastating news. one of the greatest bands of all time, and a couple i have always envied. it was a great run, hopefully they can keep it together for the sake of the music. if not, glad i had a chance to see them live.

    That's a shame for them, especially after such a long marriage. I hope they can keep Sonic Youth together, 'losing' R.E.M. was traumatic enough but if SY split up too it'd be devastating!

    wow, that's too bad. :( Really wish I had gotten to see Sonic youth at ACL 2009. They cancelled though cause Lee had a broken wrist. Would have been another awesome edition to an already epic line up for me.
    The eternal was a really interesting album, and from the earlier stuff really enjoy it when in a certain mood.
    As for the band, I think they will still play together.

    I can only see the band carrying on if the marriage breakdown has been happening for a while now, and the two of them are already used to the situation and are still good friends. If the split has only come within the last few weeks or so, feelings are raw and there is a lot of tension / emotion / potential long-term problems such as divorce proceedings etc., I can't see the band continuing properly for a while. It's like Fleetwood Mac... it took Buckingham and Nicks a long time to feel like they could get back playing together again.

    i just saw lee ranaldo's new band last night. steve shelley was on drums and lee said something like "yep, we're still playing together" with a strange emphasis on we. not sure if i should read too much into that.

    would suck if sonic youth stopped doing what they do, they are legends and their last few records have been as good as anything they've ever released. their live shows are still incredible.


    (oh yea, lee's new band was pretty fucking good)

    Not really true. Buckingham & Nicks split up during the making of Rumours around '76-'77. John & Christine McVie's marriage was breaking up at the same time. Yet all four of them toured after Rumours, made Tusk in '79, toured behind that album, and made Mirage in '82. Listen to Rumours and Tusk, and it almost seems as though the acrimonious breakups fueled the power of the music.

    Yes, Rumors is a great album BECAUSE of all the turmoil and break ups, that is a GREAT 70's album!
