Um... Are they calling themselves "Grateful Dead"? If so, I'd be very sad. I didn't mind when it was "The Other Ones" or even just "The Dead", but them continuing on with the name after Jerry died is the same as PJ calling themselves the same thing if Scott Stapp was singing. ...anyway, this shouldn't be on The Porch.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

That was the first thing I thought when I saw the thread title. How come they feel OK to call themselves Greatful Dead without Jerry? I was never a big fan but even I know that. I still don't know what to feel about the whole new AIC thing either.

I don't really see Pearl Jam and the Dead sharing a tour together.

I dont think i would ever see "the Dead" live but with Pearl jam as an opener that would make up for one messed up night. Lots of drugs and sweaty people. God... would that parking lot be a mess after the show! And smelly!

    Alpine Valley 2009!
Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked... in the head... with an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, Ted, that's a dumb question... skip that.

i'll be at the chicago show...while i don't think it would be a great mix for a concert (although i would totally dig it), there is the potential that the dead could give PJ some tips on releasing bootlegs of some old-school shows...

Not a huge Dead fan, but I would have liked to experience a show back in the day. Think it would be worth going now for someone who isn't a huge fan?

I think PJ opening for The Dead would be awesome. I would say PJ is pretty respected in the jam scene. They would fit well enough.

sweet sweet sweet... i will be attending msg!!!
  • I would go to see them again for sure. I saw Phil & Friends w/Haynes the 1st time they toured after Jerry's death, liked it, but haven't seen any other GD related live shows since. To hear those 2 drummers synch up again would be so sweet for my soul.
I'm looking at Albany and MSG.
Hey little Sat night in NYC, fuck yeah.

    I'll be there too! Can't wait :D

Do you think they'll bother with an opener at all? I could see it being an "Evening with the Dead" kind of affair.

I saw The Dead last time they toured, and even though I wasn't a huge fan at the time (fell in love with the music after the show) I had a great time. It's funny because you see a lot of people who toured with the band for years, but at the same time, a lot of younger people who are just getting into the music.
Very strange mix of people, but I'm thinking of making the drive from Detroit for the Chicago show.
It's always sad when you have to start thinking about your favorite bands in terms of, "Is this going to be the last chance I'll ever get to see them..."
"The dude abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' her easy for all us sinners."
  • just read the press release and it said that it is "an evening with the dead." i dont think there will be an opener.

i got to see the grateful dead about 150 times. i'm planning on going to the shoreline show. when i saw the dead in 2003 in phx. warren hayes did a little solo set before the dead. i also went to alpine valley in 2002 for the "grateful dead family reunion" shows. those were "can't miss" shows. both shows were simply awesome!

  • Didn't get tickets in the presale. Looked like their server crashed. Probably not a great idea to do all the presales at the same time!

Oh well. Guess I'll try in the general onsale...

I'm convinced the only thing stopping them from releasing high quality old bootlegs is the fact that they'd have to share royalties with Dave A and their egos can't handle having to speak to him again.

I have a friend gung ho on going to this show and she wants me to go with her... but I've never been much of a Dead fan, even if my jam band, hippy, stoner days.
