AMT: Coming Together

I know it may sound a little (or even hugely) ironic for me to say this, but I get a sense that, despite the usual negative, hostile interactions here on AMT, there seems to be a little bit more of a flavor of cooperation and respect here lately as well. It could just be that because I've noticed a few positive interactions between some people here and, being the hopeful optimist, I'm more focused on them, but if that's an illusion, I'm all for fostering that illusion and making it more a reality. Cooperation, courtesy and being considerate are contagious as is working for the common good. We are after all, as a poster wisely put it, The People (and I think that should be taken to its broadest sense, not just a U.S.A. thing). Most of us want pretty much the same things- to feel safe, secure and be healthy in to have a safe, secure and healthy place in which to live, be it home, country or planet. And we're all Pearl Jam fans. What more could you ask for? :)

Our government and those truly in power;--you know who they are--thrive on a divided public. The division of the masses is what gives them power. And we, The People, certainly do all we can to oblige. We are imprisoned in binaries: red state/blue state, liberal/conservative, right/left, rep./dem; and we engage in petty squabbles of "my ( most of the time uneducated) opinion that springs from my (narrow, TV and pop culture diluted) mind is better than yours," without realizing how trivial and detrimental these petty squabbles can be. Opinions triumph over facts, all the while those in power look down on us and laugh.
Hell, look at how the mainstream media talks about the occupy movement: the left's tea party; the anti-tea Party.
Can you imagine if the Occupy movement and the Tea Party came together? If they found common ground in order to make the country better and to restore democracy, instead of remaining divided?

So brianlux, I hope you are right--as I feel you usually are--and this is a sign of things to come: THE PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE instead of a government working against us for the benefit of the elite. If it can be done on the AMT, then America will surely follow (we can hope).

We've got to smarter than those in power, Whygo, but that usually takes stepping back from our situations and looking at things differently. We CAN do this!

I'm heading down to Wall St. next weekend. If I can dig up the courage to speak as part of this movement--I am deathly afraid of being on TV or being the center of attention; I treasure my anonymity--then I would love to extend an invitation to the Tea Party to join us.
Imagine what could happen if both groups came together!!

Also, look at the environmental movement, which is your area of expertise. We have to ask the question: who brought climate change/global warming and "going green" to the mainstream? Al Gore. (of course, Carson, Bookchin, Abbey, McKibben, and Kunstler have played an important role) Al Gore is a democrat, so those who despise him because he has a "D" next to his name simply fell in line and denounced his "liberal, treehugging, green propaganda." All because of the letter he has next to his name. The large majority of those who oppose the environmental movement do so without educating themselves on what is going on in this country with respect to our destruction of the natural world.
So sad that it has become political. Division, division, division.

    Yes WE THE PEOPLE can!!
I hate to say it, but our government is incompetent and detached. It is up to the people now.

Thank you for going, whygohome. And inviting the Tea Party to join- what a great idea for bringing people together!

And thank you for the nice words. It's not about me though, by any means. It's about us. I think it's very important to remember that the vast majority of us- left, right, center, black-white-brown-yellow-purple-and-green are all pretty much in the same boat. Obviously I seem to lean more to the "left" but only because my concern for the environment and social justice issues get put in that box- it's that division thing again. I see it as just wanting the world to be a more safe, secure, healthy place for me, you, everybody.

I guess if I were to put my money where my mouth is I'd be out there in the streets with you but I promised my wife some time off so we're turning the place over to the kids and heading to the woods for a while to go camping- a long over due and much needed break to re-charge the batteries. Meanwhile, be safe everybody!

    Peace and love :)
