Who has PJ inspired?

Was reading that post on what everyone will think Pearl Jam's legacy will be and saw a few people talk about how they were such a huge influence on so many bands. That just got me wondering, besides the crappy knockoffs, who has pearl jam inspired? I know I've heard death cab for cutie and my morning jacket praise them, but it seemed like it was more for how well they stayed together as a band, not as much for the music. Anyone else?

I think you have to count the crappy knockoffs. It generally shows Ed's influence on vocalists, with both voice and lyrical ideas.

Ya know, when people talk about how great Zeppelin is, then they mention Billy Squier and Whitesnake and snicker........... Well, Zeppelin was the main influence for hair metal and we know how that turned out......banshee wail vox, the acoustic stuff, the drug use, etc etc etc.

You can't fault PJ for what other people did to their influence.

Actually, not too long ago, someone from the STP said they were actually kind of proud to be the first band accused of being PJ wannabes. I think the PJ influence is more than implied here and I am not sure there is any problem with their influence including how to get along as a band and not self-destruct on booze or drugs. In fact, I would certainly include as part of their influence that they can help define what mainstream classical rock is. So I even think they have had an influence on people as different as Neil Young and the Foo Fighters. I am sure they have even influenced U2 in some ways when it comes to politics and activism.
  • I read an interview with My Morning Jacket and they said PJ influenced them big time

At Kokua 2007, with Ed on stage, Jack talked about PJ's influence on him when he was young:

    Classic Ed response too.

I think there is a great difference between "Inspired" and "Influenced" where as the great young bands that conduct business on their own terms, keep their integrity intact and develop their evolution as a band - are the ones inspired by Pearl Jam.

I feel that it's harder to tell the influences when regarding music that dilutes it's origins to a point that they create their own unique sound.
  • Do not put CREED in anything compared to PJ!!! Back in the day, 2000, Creed bassist was quoted saying "Eddie Vedder wishes he could write like Scott Stapp.". Then said "I love PJ, I don't understand the route they took, and I don't think it all had to do with Eddie Vedder." then said, "Pearl Jam, in recent albums, gone in a different direction, which is fine, but looking at thier sales and fans, you can just see the decline!" Well, now 2008 and Creed was a joke.

I was checkin ' out the competition in ther early 90s and came back from the record store with the latest crop of young bands . I'd heard " Alive " on the radio and so i settled into my car in front of my house ( my favorite listening spot ) and popped in Ten .
The first thing i noticed was the warmth of their sound even though the band was hitting hard .They had the ability to play hard and swing at the same time .The music felt composed and powerful with alot of complimentary interplay among the instruments .
These are the qualities that suggest the prescence of a real band .Listen to The Who and Led Zeppelin ....rockin' and swingin' ....Also the personalness of the songs and sound .They felt like a band intent on meaning something to its audience,..... to you .
They were not pop formalists .They were alot of fresh air in the songwriting and arreangements , the song structures were sometimes unconventional , heralding back to older pre-rock music .
The singer had a till in his voice,A fast vibrato unusual for a rock singer .
Also referring back to to old folk songs and roots music .You felt he knew the audience he was addressing was out there .Like he knew them like he knew himself or was trying to .
The trying was the important part,The whole effect was one of tenderness, subtlety, coupled with alot of power .They had soul .You can go a long way with that combination of elements .They did.
I got out of the car feeling like there was work to do .What more can you ask from a great rock band ?

    - Bruce Springsteen

apparently they impacted and inspired Bruce directly ,...as outlined in the 5 x 1 book .
