Listened to vitalogy today, really focused on the bass, and man does he rip on that album. He does so many different things, comes in at perfect times, its rather mind blowing

I too love his work on Vitalogy.

..and on top of that some of my favorite PJ songs are by Jeff.

I personally love Pilate, God's Dice, and Other Side.

Not so much love for Sweet Lew though.

    :P

    I kid Jeff.

I finally read the lyrics for Pilate.

Why the hell would Ed seriously sing about a dog?

Jeff Ament on "Pilate" and "Low Light":

"I think "Pilate" was the question I was asking myself, and "Low Light" was the answer, the realization. Have you ever read ''The Master and Margarita'' [by Mikhail Bulgakov]? I just read that book, and at the end they talk about Pontius Pilate being all alone on a mountain with his dog. He couldn't sleep and he couldn't function. It really struck me hard, because at that point I was feeling very alone. I've always had this recurring dream about being old and just me and my dog sitting on the porch. It wasn't necessarily a sad dream or a premonition, but it did get me to thinking about why Pilate was so alone and freaked out. Then I realized he didn't get to finish his conversation with Jesus—that's why he can't function, because he didn't tie up the loose ends in his life. Later, I was playing the guitar, and I was hit so hard by this amazing, emotion. In that moment the words "low light" came out, and somehow those were the only words to explain what I was feeling. It was a kind of gratefulness at finding that place of calm and peace at my center and getting a glimpse of the person I could choose to be. It was the purest happiness that I've experienced in a long time, that particular emotion. God, I thought I was going to explode. I feel very lucky to have been able to put it down on tape that morning and work through it until it became a song."

He took an already good bass-line by Stone and turned it into a fucking monster. love it.

He covers everything Vitalogy, Whipping is frantic, Immortality has such great tone, Tremor Christ is just perfect rhythm, Not For You he is just there and no more.

No Code has some great bass too. Sometimes is all subtle & then the bass on Hail Hail blows your face off. Habit is another rocker (the outro jam), and the bass in Present Tense. Phwaor.

Yeah, the title of this thread sucked me in...

Jeff kicks ASS on Vitalogy...once he slides in on 'Last Exit' he just wails, my favorite track on that album is 'Nothingman', the music and everything is just perfect, but Jeff's bass has always stood out to me

That song is just incredibly dark, but uplifting at the same time :)

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one that 100% dug on Tone. I somewhat expected that much variety from Jeff, his songs are always sounding quite different from one another.

Sleight Of Hand is a perfect example of Jeff's overlooked skill!

  • Jeff is my favourite songwriter in Pearl Jam and I wasn't surprised to find that his solo-album was the best solo effort any member of pearl jam has put out. I really hope that he can influence the course on the new album!
