The catch is that if you start making payments to cover the interest while you're in forbearance, you're immediately kicked out of forbearance and are expected to start making the full payment. Bit of a catch-22. However, your loan balance should not go up if you're making at least a full interest payment each month (as mickeyrat indicated). However, if the lenders are structuring folks' payments such that they don't even cover the interest portion, that is a problem.
edit: You might owe more when you graduate if you haven't made payments, but after 10 years you should be paid off unless you didn't make payments. They're actually set up on a schedule so that you are done after 10 years and only recently made it so that you can opt to have lower payments spread over a longer period of time if you can't afford the monthly payments on the normal schedule--and this was done because people complained about not being able to pay them, so why are people still complaining if they already got what they wanted?
