Cancel Cable

I pay somewhere near $135/month for cable TV and internet. I'm stuck using the ONLY  cable company that provides service to my area (Cox San Diego). I watch maybe 10-15 HD channels from the 700+ that I have. Mostly sports. I'm thinking of ditching the Cable TV and keeping the internet to stream from the online sources available (Netflix, Hulu).

Anyone have any good alternatives to cable TV?

Yes, I realize I could not watch it altogether :D

Damn man, that's a lot of dough, I think you're making the right move though.

You don't get DirecTV? I've got them bundled with my internet and it's under $65 every month.

I own a condo the HOA won't allow the dish (Lame). I was under a bundled package for like $65 for the first 6 months, but that has since ended and the rate is somewhere around $135 now. Way to much!!

I have no issue cancelling the TV programing because it can be streamed in multiple places already, but live sporting events are hard for me to give up (NFL, NCAA, UFC). They are certainly not worth $140 a month.

These cable companies make a killing because they own certain areas and consumers have no options. No competition means more cost to you.

Cancel the cable and get youself an hd antenna.
    I ain't got no fly'n shoes..

  • front row sports streams live sporting events.
  • To the bar to watch those sports?

A Roku / AppleTV / even a good blue ray player will give you great TV programming, in HD. Cheap for Hulu Plus, Amazon prime or Netflix.

I am in the same deal -- not allowed to get a dish and cable/net cost a fucking mint. I cant deal w/o the sports and I cant seem to stop a 6 pack from jumping down my throat when I am at a bar so I figure the cable is much cheaper than a DUI or never forgiving myself for hurting someone.

Maybe you have more control than I do? :D

I was thinking about the "Go to the bar approach". I figured I would pay more in cold ones than regular cable would cost.

I wish I could just get a "Sports" package from these criminals, but you have to get the whole 800+channels of crap too.

If you still want to have cable and just not pay as much, you can probably get your price down. Chances are when you call to cancel they'll start trying to make deals with you and you might like what you hear. The last cable company I had just had 3 packages to choose from when I joined. And all of them had HD channels which I didn't care about because I don't have an HDTV. But when I went to cancel and told them that they offered to cut the HD channels out of my package and knock off $20, and started throwing out all these options in order to try and work with me to keep me a customer. They're much more willing to try and please people on the way out than on the way in.

Yeah I got the $10 discount on internet (6 months) and the $10 discount on HDTV Reciever (6 Months). Still paying $100. I may try again.

Part of me just wants to see what life is like without cable :D Maybe I can actually be more productive ;)

Will your HOA allow the Directv dish on a pole in your yard? That way it would not be "attached" to the hone itself
