Been getting back into Motown recently. Anybody else love the sweet sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations or Diana Ross and the Supremes?

Any recommendations for a fellow Motown enthusiast?

    Marvin Gaye
Got the Marvin Gaye collection. Amazing stuff, especially the deep cuts. Sam Cooke moves me too. When you think of Motown, it was like 100 hits a year for almost 2 decades. So many fantastic songs.

James Jamerson blows my mind too. What a bassist.
  • Nice. I'll check him out. I just flipped over to the Jackson 5 collection. Their non-hits are amazing too.

edit: Where's dcfaithful? He loves Motown/Soul music.

Don't know if he counts as motown, but I love me some Jackie Wilson.

Check out this classic I hadn't heard since i was young, stumbled upon it a week ago, and have been playing it daily......you cant replicate this vibe anywhere these days.

Haha love the clay-mation. Love the song. Though Jackie Wilson was not technically on the Motown label, I still consider him from the Motown genre since he's from Detroit and put out hits during the Motown era on rival labels.

I grew up on Motown before finding Rock. Still love it. As others have said, Marvin Gaye is amazing. The whole What's Going On album is a masterpiece.

Jackie Wilson's What Does It Take is one of my favorite songs
Sam Cooke wasn't Motown but nobody has a more beautiful and soulful voice.

From Stevie Wonder's Innvervisions, Living For The City & Higher Ground are 2 of my all time favorite songs.

And of course The Four Tops/Temptations

Hell's yes. I have a Motown CD collection that scratches the surface. I also have a great Four Tops LP (I think it's a double LP) and the Supremes 3 LP set. Martha Reed and the Vandellas and Stevie Wonder are great too.

Oh James Jamerson just played bass on almost all of the Motown records in the 60's and early 70's. Chances are you've heard him...

"Little" Stevie Wonder doing Fingerprints Pt. 2 -Great stuff.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Funny you mention Jackie Wilson's Reet Petite as that song was co-written by Motown founder Berry Gordy. :D

I love Motown too! I have all The Complete Motown Singles collections that came out a few years ago, containing every single release (+ B-side) from every year between 1959 and 1971 (sadly, Volumes 12A and 12B covering 1972 still haven't been released yet).

As for Motown artists, there are so many great acts, with many having been mentioned here before. I do want to single out The Temptations and especially their psychedelic soul period from 1968-1974 when, under the guidance of Norman Whitfield, they released many great classic songs with an amazing groove. Their biggest hit from that period was Papa Was A Rollin' Stone but that's just one of their masterpieces. Check out their compilation Psychedelic Soul, highly recommended.

But if you're more partial to girl groups, then check out The Marvelettes, Martha & The Vandellas (Dancing In The Street!) or The Supremes (and don't stop when Diana Ross left as after that they also released quite a few excellent songs, like Nathan Jones).

That Motown Singles collection sounds awesome. Sounds expensive too. I gotta get more into the Temptations 68-74 as well. And yeah, Supremes had real good songs after Miss Ross left the group. I also think it's amazing the sheer volume of Motown songs penned by Smokey Robinson. Nowadays artists put out a collection of 12 or so songs every two years. Smokey was writing and performing tons of songs each year.

I do - it always makes me smile :D And I visited the Motown museum in Detroit some weeks ago with cavstarr. Go there when you can and take a tour - it's soooo much fun, everybody is singing and dancing :D

I got myself the Martha Reeves & the Vandellas anthology on vinyl in Toronto and it gets a daily spin. And Marvin Gaye, ooooh don't get me started

    Feel-good music!

Based on this thread, I looked up the Motown singles sets (Hitsville USA) on spotify.

Pleased to find the original version of Leaving Here, which I've never heard.

If you have spotify, here's a link:

I'm surprised this thread got twenty replies. Anything from before 1970 that isn't the beatles, stones, hendrix or dylan never gets any replies on the PJ message board...
