Hey folks!

I was going through mountains of music DVDs and noticed I have 2 copies of Tom Waits 'Under Review 1971-1982' DVD. Thought I might give it away to someone who hasn't seen it and would appreciate a copy.
Just tell me you favourite Waits album and why and I'll pick a winner next Monday (U.S. friends, I believe that's your Sunday?). Good luck folks! :D

(Probably should mention, I'll pick the winner randomly. ;) )

I really need to get into some more Tom Waits! I heard his work on N.A.S.A.'s "Spacious Thoughts" and was hooked. I do personally like the feel of Bone Machine.
  • I am definitely interested.

    favorite albuM: bone machine.

reason: outside of PJ, i've never identified more w/ a song than "I don't want to grow up" which is towards the end of the record. waits is a true original and is a vital American poet along with EV, neil, etc. gotta also love the closing track - "that feel" - which features Keith Richards on guitar/vocals. great, great album.

Bone Machine is great! Good choice. Couldn't help myself and bought it on vinyl.

'I Don't Wanna Grow Up' is a great song! That video of him inside that little room with his tiny guitar is awesome. :) Totally agree with you, genius song-writer. ;)

"Closing Time" because 'Martha' is the most heartbreaking song I've ever heard.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

cool offer. i'm in. small change is my favorite. i guess because i prefer his 70s work, when it was more craft than experiment. and i like the production, the sound is consistent and distinct. and it's largely about drinking, which i happen to romaticize. and it's when his voice first hinted at a growl. and to have tom traubert's blues, step right up, the piano has been drinking, and invitation to the blues, all on the same album just isn't fair to the other albums.

but i could easily make a case for closing time, heart of saturday night, nighthawks at the diner, swordfishtrombones, or bone machine.

Vey hard to pick just one, I'd have to split his career into 3 stages. From the first (the jazzy/bluesy barroom era) I'd have to say 'Small Change', from the second era (getting weird, the Frank years) It'd have to be 'Swordfishtrombones' and from his 3rd incarnation (I call this period the 'Clank and Lurch' years) I think I'd have to go with 'Mule Variations'. So hard to pick out favourites though, I love them all!!

Awesome! For me, the album I can listen to over and over again is Alice... So haunting from beginning to end, featuring some of his most gorgeous music. I'm Still Here and Fawn are beyond stunning.

    Awesome Lou!

    I'm interested.

My favorite Tom Waits album is: Nighthawks At The Diner.

Why? For one, it is smooth as all hell. Tom's banter is full of wit and has so much flow to it. The whole performance feels very natural. I also love the back story to the production, and how the studio they were using had a big room that had been used to record orchestra sections in music. Howe, the records producer, had the idea along with someone else to bring in tables, chairs, and really create the perfect atmosphere.

It is a jazz record that has a lot of character. My favorite era of his was his barroom early years.

Those eras are sooooooooo different to one another too, it IS hard to compare them.

Love Alice!!! Poor Edward and Fish and the Bird are my favourites from that album.

Love this album too! It's real 'Crack open a bottle of wine' mellow music hey?

Jeez, these are all such great answers. Really enjoy reading them all. Thanks so much for entering guys and gals. :)

Thinking about this again and Nighthawks is still what I consider my favorite, but with Tom... it's so hard.

Some of my other favorites from him are

    Blue Valentine
    Rain Dogs
    Mule Variations
    The Heart Of Saturday Night
    Bone Machine
    Heartattack and Vine

I really like Rain Dogs it has that funky little........something to it. If that makes sense (it probably doesn't). I also like Bone Machine though, I love that New Orleans, voodoo sound to it. It's awesome! But like you guys have said, it's really hard because Alice, Heartattack and Vine, etc. are so incredibly different and hard to compare that it's hard to choose a favourite. It's almost like listening to a different performer on each different album.

Yes! Everytime I listen to Tom he sounds like a completely different person from album to album. He's got a real knack for music.

Mule Variations because it is 20th century America served up raw. The music sounds just like the album cover looks. Rain Dogs because the whole album is some crazy chase starting in Singapore, a drunk shuffle through the whore houses of New Orleans, and then a violent and romantic bloody sprint from Harlem to downtown Manhattan.

Im a huge Waits fan - great comp!! I honestly think he's one of the few artists out there who's yet to make a bad album. He pushes the boundaries and without effort can make almost any kind of music. Im looking fwd to the new album :D

This choice tends to change but my vote goes to the quite splendid Swordfishtrombones!

I was lucky to see him twice on his Glitter & Doom tour
