Over the summer I did 2 Ed shows in LA and 4 Canadian shows. No issues with my backpack at most venues, except for Long Beach (really over-the top) and Hamilton (telling me after I'd had my ticket scanned I can't bring in my backpack!) WTF?!
For both shows, they took me to a room (gave me a good kicking*) and stored my bag in exchange for a ticket to pick it up later.
I guess it depends on how much stuff you need to carry with you. Good luck!
