So only 5 songs deep into Im With You, the newest Peppers album, and first one in a long time without frusciante.

While Josh is no frusciante, (realistically who is though?), seems he's a great replacement and it seems like the peppers really took the time to find the best player they could. I first became aware of Josh via his drumming with Warpaint, so he's obviously a talented guy.

Surprising to hear an understated, and almost shy guitarist like Josh on a Peppers record, as we are used to, with the last 3 of their albums of being blasted away by the virtuoso that is frusciante.

Not a huge fan of the new album, but I haven't given it a ton of time either.

I don't think they took too much time to find a replacement, as he's sorta been Frusciante's right hand man for awhile, and I think he was their touring keyboardist too.

I was/am excited to see what he has to offer, b/c as you point out Frusciante was a monster, and I really think alot the guitar playing on By The Way(my favorite of theirs) is really tasteful and less about guitar playing and more about the song than any of their other albums. On paper I'd really love the new album, so hopefully I come around to it a bit more.
  • I still need to check out the new record, but to be honest, the single hasn't gotten me that excited to buy the album. I know I will eventually. However, Frusciante is an absolute god.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

HUGE chilis fan, BIG fan of the new album. seeing them play it live the day it came out, really introduced me to not only the songs in a great way, but to Josh and his stage personality too. Every band should do it the way they did. Really makes an instant connection with the tunes, being able to see it streamed in a theater on a big screen. Two songs in, when I saw the speed at which he has to play Factory of Faith, I was like, this guy is okay in my books. Cant wait for the tour, will try and do Van and Seattle.

Sort of off topic as it doesn't pertain to the new record but I was fortunate enough to meet Josh last night at the Tinariwen show at the El Rey here in L.A. He was super nice and totally took the time out to talk to me. I mentioned how much I enjoyed the recent RHCP shows I saw and he was really appreciative. Such an awesome guy. He also mentioned how he and Flea were going to play with Tinariwen, which they did to close the show.

With regard to the album, I'm really enjoying it after two shows and the performance in theaters. I grew up with John as the guitarist and that will always be the classic lineup to me, but I really like what Josh brings to the band as well.

I like the new RHCP record a lot more than I thought I was going to. To be honest, I'm a much bigger Frusciante fan than an RHCP fan so I was ready to give up on them when he left, I'm glad I didn't!

Josh was the most obvious replacement for John though, he's been around the band for a while now and has recorded 3 albums with John in the past. You should check these out if you want to hear them playing together:

"A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence" - John Frusciante & Josh Klinghoffer
"Autimatic Writing" - Ataxia (John, Josh and Joe Lally)
    "AW II" - Ataxia

He's also played on 4 of John's solo records:

    "Shadows Collide With People"
    "The Will To Death"
    "Inside Of Emptiness"
    "The Empyrean"
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
