Starting tomorrow, grocery stores, restaraunts, gas stations, tv ads will be inundating us with their versions of the pink ribbon campaign.

Take a moment before you purchase these goods to figure out if it is doing more harm than good. Where is your money REALLY going? Is this truly funding cancer research? Or are they using slacktivism as marketing?

Cancer sucks. Research needs to be funded. However, partnering with companies who produce products KNOWN to cause cancer do us more harm than good.

Exactly, and think about why a company like the NFL which makes money on hypermasculinity with no regard for women as anything other than sexualized sideline objects would slap pink on jersey's, glove's, and cleats. Further most of the money these companies donate goes to "cancer survivors", not to research, not to prevention, and not to enact laws that would prevent companies from making money off the very thing they are causing. Yes community is important, and helping survivors is important to, but we should be trying to get to a place where "survivors" aren't needed because we actually have a cure or prevention for it.

You have to check out the Rifftrax version of that movie. Takes that movie over the top. If that's possible!

Checked out the thinkbeforeyoupink link too. Very interesting and thanks for that.

Breast cancer, like all cancers, needs a cure ASAP. My sister had it. Thank God she's now cancer free. I hate this fucking disease.

Great thread. There's plenty of excellent charities and organizations, but I'm sure there's some we should avoid. Learning about that is obviously a must.

My band contributed 50% of all revenues from our record to http://www.breastcancer.org. Pay What You Wish for a download here:

Also, playing the Breastcancer.org Rock the Ribbon at World Cafe Live in Philly, info here:

Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

Awesome to hear that your sister is now cancer free. She must feel like a weight has been lifted off her mind. My aunt had it but unfortunately she did not survive through it. So I get so happy to read when others, and their family members, have beaten and survived through this terrible disease. I applaud your sister's strength (and yours!).

i've been teaching about this stuff for several years but this is the first time my students have been getting roiled up by it. Towson athletics does tons of pink nights and my kids wanna do a PSA that outlines just how fucked up this shit is. It's not fun...it's not save the tatas....it's not beautiful...it FUCKING sucks. We gotta do more than just buy pink shit and feel better about this.

I'm very sorry to hear about your aunt. It's horrible.

My sister had a double mastectomy and her ovaries removed. She was diagnosed at around 35,had a high stage, but let's face it... was lucky. Regardless, she was and is an inspiration for me.

You know, I've thought about this in depth and I think the world (via our disagreements on nations, religions, politics, geography, etc.) can't agree on much. One thing I think we all agree on is cancer sucks. In a way, that's why it would be so cool if we could really kick this f'er in the face and get rid of it once and for all.

I wish I was a scientist, I wouldn't rest. God bless those who are. Please search and don't yield until you find a cure!

Thank you for you kind words, I appreciate it. My aunt battled and battled and never gave up her fight, but, in the end is was not meant to be. Her family, friends, and those that knew her have their memories and those are something that can not be taken away and so she still lives on in people's hearts and minds. You know, believe it or not, your sister is not only an inspiration to you, but her story would be an inspiration for all that would read it and/or hear about it. And for that, I thank you very much for sharing your sisters's story and know that she has now become an inspiration to me. Thank you.
