the NHL game is better today that it has been in a long long time. do you guys not remember the awful 90s where it was impossible to score because of the defenses and allowing interference on every play?   Offenses are fine in today's NHL. Just becomes harder to score in the playoffs because all 5 defenders will try to block every shot in the zone.  that's the biggest issue in playoff hockey. getting shots through to the net.

I'm not sure NBA will every truly take over either. there are just not enough teams that win on a year to year basis.something like the number 1 seeds have won over 70% of the NBA titles. and the 1 and 2 seeds something like 85%.  I think only 2 teams ever outside a 3 seed have won an NBA title.  the chalk plays in the NBA and it's pretty boring unless you are one of those teams.
The '90s were awful.  I believe that is when the left wing lock and neutral zone trap systems were introduced.  I quit watching hockey in the '90s...I think the game is faster than ever, allowing for the small forwards to excel.
And the two line pass. Im not sure I mentioned earlier but the NHL is unique in that it officiates differently in the playoffs.  No other league does that.  I think that stymies scoring
Why do you keep referencing the 2-line pass, it was brought back in 2005...it did fuck-all to increase scoring...

The greatest coach of all-time has said it adds no benefit and does not help to score.  He has explained why.  Read up on it, he knows more about hockey than anyone alive...

And if you wanna know how many breakaways it has added, do the research.  But facts are facts, allowing the skilled players to use their speed is increasing scoring...not the 2 line pass.

You posted the Bowman quote after I was talking about the 2 line pass.  And no thanks on crunching data on it, I really don't care any more about that than widening the net.  This is a rock band forum where we get to wonder aloud without researching.

Hockey, like baseball, is very regional with fans. They watch their home team but not a lot of out of market viewing.

You won't get a lot of fans from Texas, Florida, North Dakota and Michigan tuning in for a national regular season broadcast of a Flyers/Bruins game on a Sunday afternoon, nor would many of those fans tune into the Phillies/Red Sox on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, but you'd damn sure get a lot of them to tune into Eagles/Patriots for Sunday Night Football.

National viewership will increase to a degree in playoffs, especially finals, but nothing like the NFL or NBA will draw. Not even close.
last Saturday night the NHL did a 1.2 rating on NBC (4.3 million viewers). the NBA did a 1.7 (5.33 million viewers).  it's closer than you think.

Likely be a bigger disparity during the Finals, though the lack of a LeBron has/will hurt the NBA this year.
    This weekend we rock Portland

not sure about that.  NHL will have much bigger market teams.  Looking at Boston vs.San Jose/St. Louis in the NHL while the NBA is going to be Golden State vs. Milwaukee/Toronto. Small US market or non-US Market in the Eastern Conference for the NBA. that's not a good way to get ratings.

It looks like a blown call...

CBC's last replay showed the possibility that the puck may have hit a St. Louis player, barely.  But certainly not definitive and certainly not something the refs saw.  The CBC host said the back ref is responsible for tracking the puck...the reffing these playoffs have been bad.  And SJ is benefiting a little.

Nothing can be done now.  St. Louis just has to move on and win the next game.

However, I am getting the feeling that maybe this is SJ year?

not sure how the refs missed that one.  it was obvious to everyone i was watching it with right away that it was a hand pass.  shitty way to take a "L" in OT playoffs ...

San Jose is benefitting more than a little. This is the third time this postseason. Once in each series.
  • Jason PJason P Posts: 19,138
I'm not sure I've seen a home crowd that stunned before ... their brains couldn't process how the refs were not overturning a clear illegal pass.  Refs got out of there just in time to avoid being pelted with bud light cups

I am more surprised that all scoring plays are not reviewed by upstairs?  That is coming.  They review offsides, why not a quick review of a scoring play.  That would have taken no time to overturn.  I hope the refs get out safely...

I did not realize they have benefitted 3 times.  St. Louis is not done.  Berube will have them ready for the next game.

Yeah man. If the NFL can do it for every scoring play, why not hockey?

Also, I hope I didn’t come across as a dick in my post about SJ benefiting. Apologies if I did. It reads worse than what I was trying to say. Emotions were running a little high in the ledvedderman house and I probably could have phrased that better. You’re right that Berube will have them amped up for game 4.

Now to try to fucking sleep after that. God damnit.

No need for an apology.  That was a bogus call.  Does it not seem obvious that scoring plays should be reviewed??

I think the camera motion on the shot above makes it look like it change directions several times depending on which way it pans.  There are better views out there.  Doesn’t really matter if the refs no see

Yes I'd watch a playoff hockey game than the NBA Finals. There's nothing like playoff hockey especially if your team is still in the hunt for the Cup, that said......

GO BRUINS 5 more wins and BOSTON will be the ONLY city EVAH to defend 3 titles in the same year.

I think the blues got robbed, no doubt.  I did not see enough to convince otherwise.  That video was proof that it would likely not be a quick video review...but I still think game-winning goals in the playoffs should be reviewed...

Hate to see good games end that way. Need to close games out when you have the lead at home with a minute left and an empty net.

agree and karlsson doesn't really react after he scores like he knew it was coming back. you can't miss that call in a playoff game.  feel bad for the Blues.
