Never was a FaceBook person. My wife is. I do not have enough time to talk to the 10 people in my life I want to talk to let alone having 150 friends.
I do believe they have been doing this for a while and can you imagine the money that advertisers pay for this info? This is like gold.

Do you think Facebook is like a guilty pleasure for people? For example, you have probably known or had a feeling that they have been tracking you for years but you still have to use it. Also, you like the fact that it is an US magazine/gossip website and you love looking at other peoples business. grant it they throw it out there but you are friends with them so you can see what they are up to.

I actually don't mind, my life is very boring and I have nothing to hide, which I understand is not the point, but I just don't see any harm. If anything maybe they could use the information to catch creeps.

Then maybe that's a problem since they're making money off me but it is a free service that many people enjoy. If they were just upfront about it I don't think anyone that uses Facebook would care, people post personal details about their lives, often too much, so I don't think they would have a problem with it, it's mainly chicks posting pics from their night out and such.

I love the Shining too, figured it was an appropriate time of year for the avatar if ever, glad you got it! Jack's best movie!

With that Facebook is a genius at capitalizing on lonely/boring people and using the data to make billions to vendors with something to sell. So their growth appears limitless.

How the Like button has evolved.

A year ago, the use of the "Like" button went crazy as soon as Facebook allowed people to integrate it to any website.
Through its experiences of the past year, Facebook discovered that a "Like" button is now mostly clicked by a person when they are making an endorsement for a product or service to their friends.
So what started out as Facebook users going all out and liking everything and anything (of course creating tons of content for other Facebook users to additionally like and comment on) has no scaled back to a point where people are much more selective in what they appreciate digitally these days.
So, Facebook needed a way to turn this trend around and start another content sharing explosion. Now instead of just being able to "like" a book, users will be able tell friends when they have "read" a book. Or "listened" to a song. Or, in the case of the travel industry, "booked" a flight, "hired" a car, "stayed" in a hotel, "done" a tour, "reviewed" a point of interest.

if you use facebook at all regularly i think it would be fairly obvious, judging from the targeted ads constantly in the sidebars, that they have a pretty good tap going on.....no surprise. i'm sure fb are not the only ones. putting any personal info on the internet whatsover is to be putting yourself out there for all who might be interested in exploiting that info. just google your 10C user name ... all sorts of good stuff..any post you have ever put up on here is visible to all via a simple google search. its the risk you take. its moderns society, whether we like it or not.

Yeah but when you log off you should be logged off. They shouldn't be able to follow every website you go to. Shit, even if you are logged on to facebook and open up another window they shouldn't be able to see your every move. It's just creepy.

  • I rarely "like" anything on there. I don't put my email, phone, address, or any other personal info on FB or anywhere online. The scariest thing for me is the facial recognition software... in the future (or maybe now) your picture will be in a government database which they can use to scan and recognize you when out in public. Owe a parking ticket and walking outside? Boom... arrested.

FB has files on like 1/2 the population and the FBI recently said they can access ANY companies database... without giving a reason for doing so.

(this was all on NPR a few months ago... I"m not just being a conspiracy theorist)
Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.
