It's not competition when the playing field is not level due to regulations. It would be competition if OP was able to hire undocumented workers as well or if these other companies who were hiring undocumented workers were actually penalized per the rgulations, but instead, OP was regulated from being able to hire these workers yet the regulations failed in holding others to the same standard.0 -

I'm not sure what state you live in,but in my state almost every job site you see it doesnt matter If it's commercial or residential construction a majority of the workers are Latinos. The problem is many of them are here illegally.
It wasn't that long ago that being a dry-waller, brick-layer, house framer, painter, roofer, carpet layer, plumber, or electrician was a decently compensated, middle class trade. Now it is increasingly becoming the work for illegal aliens at far less than the free market rate. their willingness to work at dramatically lower rates drags down the compensation for all workers.0 -

Well some people will never get it.....our own people are being squeezed out of trade work in our own backyard on our own soil! Its a shame, that within 4 years i went from a strong happy motivated business owner....to a delapidated, weak and beaten handyman! Thats what happened to me in 4 years on our soil!

I havent been able to actually put a business together again. I am just a handyman now...struggling with trying to just make it, let alone hiring a legal citizen on and running a business legitamately! Legally and ethically i cannot compete and make it! There is a brotherhood amongst my competition that just overrides my hard work ethic! I cannot compete against them because their cost of living and way of life is much less than mine! They have guys to do the work for much less! In this economy im doomed!
I have downsized so much ....i dont have anything left to enjoy! My TV is as deep as it is wide! My car and work van are beaters! I pay for everything cash....i cannot get loans!
I have learned to live for less....and accept that i wont own a home!
I say reform immigration and give them a path to citizenship now! Bring soldiers home from Iraq and put a division down on the border now! Stop the influx, create path to citizenship, bring in tax revenues! Hold all accountable like we all are held! Make this playing field....LEVEL!
The Democratic Party is using this issue as a tool and expedience! NO GOOD! I can see it and feel it! Easy to see!

There are many people to blame for the recession problems I suppose. Sometimes it seems that illegal workers have nothing to do with it. It's the often rich republicans that hire them and then turn around and complain that are to blame in my opinion. But it's hard to say what your exact situation is or where you live, hopefully it's not horrible Arizona. Hopefully things get better for you and you are able to one day see the entire picture from a different view.0 -

What you said earlier was that you compete against "hispanics and undocumented workers". What's implied in that is that if they're Hispanic, then they're an illegal. You didn't say that you compete against whites, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics, as well as undocumented workers. Your statement could be seen as racist or prejudice because it supports the common assumption that most Hispanics in the U.S. are illegal. It looks like you played the race card first.
You also used the term "assimilate" in relation to your girlfriend. Typically, assimilation is not seen as a good thing, and it's used for someone who has abandoned their cultural roots (by force or choice, or a combination of the two) in order to fit into the majority culture. Maybe I'm just picking at word usage.0 -

One thing you can always be sure on, is that people will use anything for political gain, whether it be the fear of illegal immigrants, or the protection of them...both are often used as political tools to lock up votes. If anyone actually cared something would have been done long ago, at least that is my opinion on it. Not sure why we don't just let people get guest worker status. There needs to be a way to cross the border, work, and go back home eventually without a problem. This isn't just a problem for illegal immigrants either. Professionals from all over the world have trouble coming here to work and stay. My buddy got sent back to Canada because of the issue. Strange. We get a lot more security over who would come in, they could have their own tax rate with no deductions or loop holes, but would not pay into payroll tax for social security.
