How many hours before showtime does one need to get into the venue in order to hear the PJ sound checks?

I don't think they'll let you in the venue.

...however, depending on the setup and other things, IF they do a soundcheck, it can be as early as 4pm and as late as 30 minutes before doors.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

  • Mudhoney will be the last to soundcheck, so they'll be the ones soundchecking last.

Hang outside the venue, you can hear it quietly through the walls. I could still hear Kings of Leon outside GM Place when I left early, as well as John Mayer.
  • I was just curious how some of the relay threads have soundcheck information. Where do they get it from?

Either they have access inside the venue (work inside, etc) or they can hear if from outside, like outdoor venues... or some venues you can hear thru the walls.

  • Usually, PJ will sound check at 4pm for an 8:45-9:00pm show time. Scope out the venue beforehand to see where you can hang out and listen. Some places will let you hang out if you don't get in the way or act like a fool. Other places will tell you to get lost. I got to hear some great songs by hanging out listening for the sound check. One of the best was BLACK, RED YELOW at the Spectrum in 2009. I still can't believe they did not play that song, during the show.

I think 99% of the soundcheck reports that are posted here are people that hear it from either the willcall area or just by hanging around the venue. If its an outdoor place its always easy to hear it - if its indoors it can be trickier but I've (almost) always been able to hear it by walking around the venue and finding a spot where the sound gets through.

Only exceptions are the Garden in Boston and MSG in NY - I guess being on another level makes it impossible for the sound to travel down. :)

Which I was fortunate enough to watch their soundcheck there in 2008, and in 1998 they didn't soundcheck (in nyc that is for both answers).

In NYC, the arena floor is the 5th floor. But if you're at the bottom of the ramp, there's a slight chance you can hear it, especially if the trucks didn't plug the hole.

One day I'll figure out a way to get in and check it out, but it seems just about impossible to pull off. :)

Probably is mostly. They're one of the only bands (or were) that does a true "lockdown" when they enter the building. Not even stagehands are usually allowed around once they're there.

Outdoor venues though are probably best. You can hear those pretty well.

Yeah - you always hear about bands letting people in to hear soundcheck and I've NEVER seen anyone (but you, but you worked @ MSG) say they were in there watching soundcheck. Seems like they really don't want people watching them at that time for whatever reason.

Most bands aren't too tight about it, and while they don't let anyone watch, they don't stop staff from being around.

Out of about 300 shows, I'd say about 5 bands had real lockdowns, where no one but essential people were allowed around.

    Pearl Jam
    The Who
    Marylin Manson
    Madonna
...can't remember the fifth band. Maybe a few others that I don't remember.

  • I have a small rectal microphone that i affix to one of the mice/rats from that particular venue. That works.
