Vocal Melody?

So, for all you musicians out there, or musical theorists, i have a question. Say you like the way a song is sung. Not necessarily the lyrics, or the instrumention, more so, how the musician sings the words/lyrics. What is that called. is that a vocal melody?, vocal harmony? or something totally different. I guess an example we all would be familiar with is how Ed sings, Once Divided Nothing Left to Subtract, Some Words when spoken, Cant Be taken Back. Sort of how he sings it, it meanders, dips and dives. Or Jerry Cantrell's My Song, not the killer guitar riff, but how he sings, "she got her own ways, same as yesterday". So how he sings that.

What is that called?

Thanks

  • If you mean the actual notes sung, then its the melody.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

You mean you could hum it, and it would be the same thing....

    melody line, I think.

    That's what I call it
  • thanks guys, yeah i think thats it. Heres a youtube video of what i was talking about. a duet, christmas song with mick flannery and lisa hannigan. I love how they sing the words. The whole song, but most specifically Micks verses, "You and i alone will go, i will walk you all the way back home". I find the melody intoxicating. How the melody twists and turns.

micks verse starts at 1:06, but lisa's verse is the same melody that im obsessed with as well

the piano and that thing lisa plays is great, but im more in love with how they sing the lyrics.
