Yeah, that video has been circulating for years (it's from the 2004 R&R Hall of Fame induction ceremony and been on YouTube since) under the title of "greatest guitar solo ever", or whatever. It's good, but I don't think it's the greatest. I remember the first time I saw it, I'll admit it blew my mind, but mainly because I didn't know that Prince could play guitar anywhere approaching that level. I knew he played, but not like that.

I think the look on Dhani's face is more a reaction to Prince's showmanship (which he has plenty of) as he fell backwards into the waiting hands of of somebody who pushed him back up.

Don't get me wrong, I CAN'T PLAY THAT, but I can think of many better guitar solos. It's all opinion of course. I think what makes that video so popular, and seem so great, is the mixture of showmanship and technical skill. Prince can make just about anything look cooler than it actually is. Prince could just bang away on an A chord and make it look magical. He's clearly doing more than that here, but still, he makes it look better than it is. I do love it though.

What the hell? This is the kind of solo that ANYONE with great technical guitar skill can bash out... there are guys down my local pub playing guitar solos like this, you can probably find those on youtube as well. The fact this is Prince has blown the video completely out of all proportion. The guy is a class act and I'm a fan, but best guitar solo ever?!?

I give him 10/10 showmanship, 9/10 technical skill, 2/10 creativity/soul/feeling/inspiration. It's a slick, well rehearsed solo... nothing more. The video and this thread, in fact, make me sad for people

i love the prince deal. it's more than just the solo. george harrison was amazing, and this was for him. seeing all those guys up there and having prince come out and tear shit up is just really fucking cool. you feel the moment...well, i do anyway. i'll never tire of that video.

I preferred the Concert For George version though. I don't think Tom Petty plays on it (though he played at the concert) but Jeff Lynne played, Clapton was on vocals and lead guitar, Dhani was there, Paul McCartney, Ringo, etc...

It didn't have the flashy solo, though I think Clapton played a better one, and since he was the one who played it originally on the album, and on stage with George at the Concert for Bangladesh, I think it works. And I think this version is more heartfelt..
