The challenge of being a new fan

I saw PJ for the first time in Mansfield this past June. I was a casual fan, and my friend & I thought it would be a fun show, so off we went. I had no idea what I was in for! I came away from that show kicking myself for missing out on the last 16? 18? years of this band. Then again, maybe the music wouldn't have "fit" me at any other time in my life until now. So I've missed a lot, but I'm in it now.

Since that show I have listened to PJ & EV almost exclusively, and this is where the challenge comes in. Damn, there is a lot of music to learn! Of course I want to know every word to every song, a daunting task to say the very least.

Someone earlier today posted that they were listening to Binaural today, all day. I've never done that, in fact I don't think I've listened to a single studio album in its entirety, at all. I've been soaking up every single live show I can get my hands on, though (which incidentally is not the most effective way to learn the lyrics, ha).

I was going to say there's just not enough hours in the day to listen to all I want to listen to, but really, I guess I have all the time in the world. What's the hurry, right?

So all this is just to say hey, and while it's a "challenge", it's one I will enjoy taking on.

welcome. Everybody started at some point. I 'started out' somewhat in 2003, which I at the time considered really late, but in the past 5 1/2 years, I have had some great times going to shows listening to bootlegs, etc. PJ has gotten me through some long drives.
The collections start too. Posters, vinyl, ticket stubs, etc...

kinda reminds me of my story :)

i liked PJ from day 1 but didn't get around to seeing them live till '04 (dumb ass)but in '06 i got me a 11th row tic @ Boston Garden and was transformed(in a matter of hours) into one of the many junkies you will meet around here!

i had 1st row @ Mansfield this summer and it only solidified my addiction to this band!! :D:D

so you are not alone and like they say "better late than never"!!!

WELCOME,TO THE GREATEST FAN CLUB/MESSAGE BOARD EVER!!!

    YIELD.

YIELD is by far the best album (as per the general consensus on this board). It's a great summer/outside album; pick that one up or listen to it watching the sunset or while driving on a gorgeous blue-skied day.
Do you remember Rock & Roll Radio?

    I agree on Yield.

Or you can listen to them all and space it out in order, culminating when the new album comes out.

  • Benaroya is one of the first albums my friend shared with me - it was an instant favorite, and the one I still go to when I need something a little more low-key. Right now I'm listening to the "epic" Boston 7/11/03 show. I'm having a hard time tearing myself away from the live stuff.

Thanks for the links & suggestions, everyone. I've been lurking here for a bit so I've checked out some of these already.
Oh, and I will say that my drive from Boston to Montreal (yes, to see EV) was a great time to get some listening in.

And don't even get me started on collecting... I'm trying not to go there, but we'll see!

Dont worry. it will eek its way in. Starts out as a small leak, and eventually the damn bursts.

    I disagree.

I think following the band in the order of their discography is the best way. You really see how they evolved.

    Welcome.
I started in college in 1991.
I saw them back then. Lost track of them in about 1999 and caught up again in 2004. I'm so glad they're still around.
    How old are you?

I'm 37. Don't ask me what I was listening to in the early 90's, though. Honestly I don't even remember. Obviously some non-memorable garbage.

    I agree.

Also, I'm stunned that the consensus on the forum is that Yield is their best.

Any fool knows that No Code is their best album.

I don't think you can go wrong by going in order on the albums. You can really see the progression of the band.

Smart. Stay away from the poster thing. Jamily Posters are stupid and a waste of money. People on here throw away hundreds (some with unknowning spouses) on those damned things, even posters of shows they never went to.

My old best friend had me listen to them when I was 11 (which I'm only 23 now so it wasn't too horribly long ago) and ever since then I was hooked. We'd talk all night on the phone and he'd recite lyrics and have me tell him which songs they were from. It was a lot of fun..

I only have one small issue though with fans that know a lot about PJ (or any band, I guess). It's the fans that kind of rub it in other fans faces.. Like, "Well I know that at this concert on such and such date, Eddie wore this shirt.." That's cool that you know it, but when they're all acting like they're more of a fan because of it, it's kinda lame. People always ask me about the band members lives (wives, kids, where they live..) and if I don't know the answer, it's like I'm not a true fan or something. I like they're music. I know a few things about it but I'm not gonna rub it in people's faces.. And I couldn't tell ya about their personal lives (what they don't divulge on a regular basis) because I don't know them.. And who knows, maybe if I did, I wouldn't like them..

So basically after this long winded post, I'm just saying that its so cool to know all kinds of stuff about the band but it just sucks when people think they're better then you because they know some crazy obscure facts..
