Dexter book vs. tv show

I just finished reading the first Dexter novel tonight...and I'm curious to hear others' opinions on how it compares to the tv show.

For me, this is a rare case where the book is inferior to the tv show. I enjoyed the "courtship" between Rudy/Brian and Deb in the show, and was disappointed when the book went in a different direction.

Perhaps it's because I saw the tv series before reading the novel. Thoughts?

    I thought the first book was great. I read that thing pretty darn quick. same with the second one. I had the 3rd book for a month and still didn't finish it. Wasn't good at all.
