Dear Ed,

Bruce wrote "My City Of Ruins" before 9-11 happened ,
it was written for Asbury Park New Jersey.

Of course as with much of Bruces' music,
it was appropriate in all types
of different and unique situations,
and this song went well with 9-11.
:)

This is a nice version,
but the Kennedy Center version was way better ;
because you can clearly see how
you moved both Patti & Bruce .
For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside
That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive

just watched the kennedy center performance. WOW! it made me tear up.
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.

Not entirely true, I am no Springsteen fan (but loved this song when I first heard it back in 2001). I remember an interview with Springsteen where he said he modified the lyrics post-Sept. 11 for the Tribute to Heros fundraiser, and forever going forward he said that is what he would associate the song with, not Asbury Park. So techinically Eddie might not be correct about the orgins of the song, but he is correct about the meaning/current lyrics.

Thanks for the link, Arcade Fire sharing a stage with Eddie is awesome.

oh yes most definitely bruce altered it.
but i believe it does originate around asbury pk originally.
    it definitely lingered around,
    and was performed many times
before it was finally added to the album "the rising".
the original video had the calliope/carousel house
and the mural with tillie the clown,
all broken down landscape and empty asbury landmarks.

That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive
