Since Middle Brother is made up from members of Deer Tick, Dawes, Delta Spirit - can anyone give me some recommendations from these three bands on which albums I should check out?

Thanks! I've never heard of anything by any of these bands - but I'm loving Middle Brother!

Dawes have two albums Nothing is Wrong which came out earlier this year and North Hills.

I like Nothign is Wrong more. It seems more polished and the guitar work is more fun on it.

I'm much more of a Deer Tick fan then i am a Dawes fan. This is how i'd break down the Deer Tick albums:
War Elephant- First album eclectic mix of songs they are kind of workign their way into their sound. The constant throughout though are the lyrics this is a really good debut that just feels like they have a lot more potential then they reach on this album. (my second fav but i catch myself thinking it is my fav sometimes)

Born On Flag Day- Probably the one i consider my favorite the most. They are still working on their sound a little but when they hit they hit strong. THe opening song i think shows the kind of stuff they could write. It has great melody great lyrics and rockin enough to get you going. Strong album throughout.

Black Dirt Sessons- Went in a different directions. Not as many rockin songs here more low key dark and murky tunes. Good but different then what they had one before.

I have not checked out delta spirit yet but i will sometime.

Have you ever checked the Jayhawks out? I like to compare Middle Brother to them in a favorable way. If you have not Hollywood Town Hall is a sensational album.

    Nice writeup "intodeep".

I'm a fan of all three bands but moreso Dawes and Deer Tick. I LOVE Dawes' first two albums, I think both are teremendous, especially for a young band. They remind me of a young Crosby, Stills & Nash combined with Tom Petty. Great songwriting and harmonies.

Also love Deer Tick and probably agree that Born On Flag Day is their best. Black Dirt Sessions is really dark & heavy, wouldn't recommend it to someone trying to get their first taste. They've got a new album coming out shortly and I'm looking forward to that.

Biggest thing for me is that these bands are great live. I've seen them all several times, along with Middle Brother a couple times and have LOVED the shows. These guys seem to bring it every time they're on stage, I've never left disappointed. Really can't go wrong.

Also, here's a few reviews/recaps I've written over the last couple years seeing these bands (if that helps you get a better sense of their style):

  • i know this may sound cliche and not what you want to hear, but BUY IT ALL. I love all three of these bands. And if I'm not mistaken, none of them have more than 3 full-length releases.

Middle Brother live is awesome. I just caught them last month up in Newport, RI at the Folk Festival (awesome time by the way if you ever get the chance to go). Middle Brother played like a 45 minute set and then the rest of the guys from Dawes came on stage to close the set and they did "Fire Away" and "When My Time Comes".

Deer Tick (& Friends) also played 3 TINY club shows over the weekend at this little place called the Newport Blues Cafe. We went Sunday night and it was so awesome, the Dawes and Delta Spririt boys were in the house to guest sing/play and Jonny Corndawg made an appearance too. Just a great weekend of music.
