Saw some dick make the guy working the merch booth outside the venue open every pick of posters and pick out the two (8 in total) "randomly placed" variants, and bought them all. No idea why the guy working the table actually did it. I hope nobody buys them, but I'm sure they will. Is this going on at every show? They really need to make a one poster per person max.

Yeah there is NO reason the merhc people should have gone through the posters for the variants... and really NO reason to give 2-3 to the same person. That was insane... :(

The variant is just a blue shading instead of yellow though - honestly its not a big deal. I hope people dont overpay for them and I hope people dont get too bent out of shape.

Its not like variants that glow in the dark or have metallics or something else crazy like that. :)

It's the principle more than anything really.

No - I know that. I just mean I hope people aren't going to get too upset about it, and I also hope people arent dumb enough to spend a ton of money to buy a poster with a blue stripe instead of yellow.

I say this knowing how much I'll pay for colored vinyl, so what do I know?

People working at the merch table don't care about how many posters they sell to one person, the sooner they finish selling the merchandise the sooner they get out of there... That's how it is :|

That would likely be cause you didn't actually see what happened

I was right beside the guy - it happened right at the beginning of the merch going on sale and the guy bought one for him and one for his buddy (standing directly behind him) because he like the variant better and each wanted one - not to sell (I happen to have met this guy at a number of previous shows in Toronto and he is regularly one of the first there as he is a collector who has picked up prints for me before when I could not get there early enough)

the merch guy behind the table selling them was kind of enough to OFFER to search through them and find 2 of them and then the buyer tried to tip an extra $5 for going to the the trouble on his behalf but the merch guy wouldn't accept it - was happy to find them for him

really nothing to get bent out of shape over actually something quite nice

perhaps next time you actually find out what happened before calling someone out - just a thought

The variant is a poster with a different color scheme than the regular version, the run of the variant is a very limited in comparison with the regular version, what makes it more rare and collectible.

I must of been blind but I didn't see any variants @ the merchandise tables. :( Maybe cause I went to 1 or 2 tables. Later online did I find out about these variants.

So they sold reg/variant prints @ the show, unsigned right?
  • I agree this is major bs. It's like asking the clerk at the liquor store to give the lottery tix that hit it big. Come on people!
  • Who gives a shit. Now that everyone knows how collectable posters are, everyone who wants one buys it and saves it so making decent money off a poster is much harder than it was in the past. I mean this isn't 1998 where posters can shoot up to $400 or $500 and stay there, because no one thought to buy them and save them. I mean there are still a ton of posters from shows from the last few years available in the Goods section. I know these are variants so they will sell for a bit more, but with two posters this guy will be luckily to make back what his ticket cost thim.

defeats the purpose of randomly inserted variants, no? random implies luck and your friend was more than lucky. think about how many "collectors" or "serious fans" out there that would love to have a variant because its better (not to sell of course).

so the OP went overboard and called out your friend for being a dick. your friend didnt initiate the search for variants, and since the merch guy offered, how many of us would truly have the strength to say no? certainly, your friend isn't a dick, but it doesn't make it less of a dick move for everyone else though.

as for the value of variants, last i checked, i think Bk's Pj20 variant is around 500-600? So, he could be making back more than just a ticket cost depending on the artist.

Is that a fair comparison though? Since looking at expressobeans, the regular version of that poster is averaging around $130. And I would be seriously surprised if the regular versions of any of the Canadian tour posters sell for that much. I mean I don't think any of the 05 Canada tour posters sell for more than $100 any more. And either way I think buying a couple of extra poster to try and make some cash (at least a worthwhile amount of cash) is a huge crapshoot. Sure you might make a couple of hundred bucks (but you might make a couple of hundred bucks if you spend 60 bucks at the casino). On the other hand you might end up with a couple of posters that people aren't really that interested in and you can only make 20-40 bucks a piece on.

Also: mistake. Or artists having second thoughts after the first few test runs. Not all are done this way (Emek intentionally makes variants.), but many variants arise out of the ashes of mishap.

What about the other 6 he bought? I was right there too and watched the guy open four packages of posters and take ALL of the variants out. What a nice guy though, he offered the worker $5 of the hundreds he stands to make off of them on EBay... Class act. Get a clue dude. "Just a thought".

Wow, it gets worse. Come on. How can anyone defend a guy that purchased all of the variants from 4 boxes? Tip the guy $5? 8 variants will at least triple on eBay so the guy will make at least $500. This ain't right!
