I like to look around at the crowd during the show to see the energy. to my left everyone on the first row of the bowl were texting or playing with their phones.

Before Neil came out last night in toronto, the guy to my left was texting during RITFW.

Is this normal? Sorry I don't give a crap about other people, but was blown away by this.

Is it just me?

That's what the kids do nowadays. That's what my old man would say.

I don't feel the need to text my buddy who's not at the show that Neil was there. I'd wait till I got home to tell him

Instant communication/gratification. That's the norm today. People need to be the first to let the world know that something is happening for some reason. God forbid they wait until after the show.

I don't get it.. I wonder how that looks or feels from on the stage? You paid for the ticket so, I guess you can fill that seat however you want but, have some respect for the people up there pouring it out for you... There is a lot you can miss in 20 seconds.

I was occasionally texting a good friend of mine who was also at the show. Generally it would be something like "CHLOE DANCER???!!!". Sharing the experience w/o sitting together.

  • I had somebody sitting down in front of me for most of PJ20 2 (seats). I think she finally stood up after getting kneed in the head one too many times while I was rocking out.

  • Meh. When you're going hard for a whole show, everyone needs a breather now and then. I go to pj shows because I love pj... if I text a buddy I couldnt sit with about how fkin sick mike was during that cut of porch right now...I'm gonna. Not that big of a deal

If we wanna whine about something, floor "seats" are sooooo lame. The number of times i had an usher shine that damn light in my face because of how fiercely policed the floor is pure silliness. Last night was first time on the floor and not impressed at all. Really sucks the energy from a set being babysat the whole time. Bring back some general admission areas and let the whiners go into the bleachers.

This is it exactly!! And a bit hypocritical that there are hordes of people on this very forum who insist on knowing the setlist as it happens and too many people at the show willing to oblige.

I'm from the school of do your own thing. If someone wants to text...cool. If not ...cool too. I don't understand why people make an issue out of it. Worry about yourself because ultimately that's the only thing you can control.
  • People really chafe about stuff like this?
I text during shows. It beats the hell out of talking over a song, doesn't it? I think hearing about someone's cat in an obnoxious conversation behind me is far more annoying than a little LED light 3 seats down.

Don't listen to me, though, I'm the girl who sometimes wears Pearl Jam shirts to Pearl Jam shows, so I know what my opinion is worth.

Ray Lamontaigne at the Greek in Berkeley on Friday night, dude next to me texting the whole night, kinda annoying -- clickity, clickity. But eating his chips outta the noisy chip bag was worse. So it's Ray ... very, very quiet show, can hear everything in the joint. And two girls tuck in behind us and proceed to review the week in normal voices through two whole songs. Five of us all turned around just staring at them dumbfounded ... and they gave US nasty looks like we were being rude! Had the usher shut 'em up.

It's just the way folks are today, oblivious to how rude their actions might be to those around them.

Manager was interviewing a new college grad and the kid took and sent an IM during the interview. Didn't think twice about it. He will now, interview immediately ended -- kid had no concept that that would be percieved as rude, apologized profusely as he was shown the door.

O.M.G! That's like, so unfair!

I think you hit the nail on the head. People can be completely oblivious that their actions are having any impact on anyone else. I understand how this happens, there's many a time I've found myself in my own little world reading emails, playing that stupidly addicting bird game, etc. If only they would think to dim their displays it wouldn't be so much of a distraction, and maybe even go unnoticed.

see i could understand for a quiet show being bother by people talking and texting but at a rock concert oh well. i remember at the adele concert there was so many people singing even her very slow songs to the point that you could even hear Adele sing. i was pissed.

I don't care what they're doing as long as it doesn't interfere with me watching the show. One thing that is starting to bug me is all of the thousands of people holding up their iPhones the entire concert so they can take pictures and tape. I don't care if they do that for a little bit, but the whole concert?! I can't see!

This basically. Maybe someone has a bunch of twitter followers who want to know what's going on - not everyone who likes Pearl Jam is on this board. As long as they're not bugging me (like clapping their hands over the space of 3 seats including in my face or spilling beer on my feet - and yes its happened) I don't care what they do.

I was in section 119 row 2 at Toronto night 1.

Behind me there was this little turd nugget texting through the whole show.

Dear idiot teen in the blue hat.... Why the fuck were you even there. You made me mad that the seat you were in was wasted on a stupid little turd like yourself. I hope next time PJ plays and whoever took you leaves you the fuck at home.

It may look like i am ignoring the show for moments at a time..... please do not give me grief for texting! :)

  • I will freely admit that people who are addicted to texting and tweeting, to the point where they cannot pay attention to the perfectly good people and occurances happening in their immediate surroundings, bug the shit out of me ... Albeit not to the point where I view it as my job to set them straight. Being like this is annoying and probably unhealthy, but its not a crime.
