Slaves found in Britain.

Shocking story of 24 people you have been kept as slaves in a "travellers" site in England. Some of whom have been kept for up to 15 years! The story says they were groomed from places like the dole office and told they would be fed and paid 80 pounds a day for work..... looks like this never happened. Many kept in very poor conditions like horse boxes too! I am shocked......

I agree that it's outrageously horribly, but I'm not shocked. According to the United Nations, there are 2.5 million people being used as slaves at any given time. The International Labor Organization puts the number at 12.3 million, and some estimates are as high as 27 million. And hundreds of thousands of these slaves are in the United States, probably in all of our towns.

I suppose I find it hard to think it happens.. but you are certainly right that it does.. awful.

I am originally from not far from where they found the slaves.. weird.

this is what just slays me

"But in fact some people did leave and told us what was going on and when we looked back since 2008 we were aware of 28 people who had made similar accusations."

Absolutely... its ridiculous... how many accusations are necessary?

I agree. The problem (one of the problems, in my opinion) is that the demographic of people who are likely to be exploited in that way - vulnerable populations (the poor, minorities, children, drug addicts, etc.) - are the same demographic who the police/government tend to not take seriously or just not really care about. This is especially true when the trafficked people are forced into criminal activity such as prostitution or drug dealing; they're just seen as another criminal & nobody wants to listen to them. And of course things are made worse by some of the immigration policies. (I'm speaking generally, of course, not necessarily about this story specifically.)

Don't disagree with any of this, just find it hard to believe that (if there was) accusations of people being kept in horseboxes, not fed etc etc then an investigation wasn't launched.. even criminals have human rights!

In the UK there is an organisation called the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) they get involved when things like this happen.. I hope they do so with this.

sad bullshit. slavery is all around us, everywhere, and all forms of it. for example, the asian prostitution ring is out of control here in the u.s.

i wasn't kept in a shithole like the ones in the op's link, i came and went as i pleased, i worked at a place three different times that ran on slave labor type crap. no breaks type shit.

i'd go there and get a job when i needed one and no one else was hiring and i was ready to bust ass. i never sweated so much in all my life. at the end of the day i was as hard as a rock and about half pissed off. 5am - 3pm with almost no break, enough time to grab a sandwich and some water, rest my aching bones for a few short moments then on again till homeward bound.

    1. all that job taught me was to dislike slave labor type assholes.
    2. it taught me to get a fucking skill and quick.
    3. it taught me that some wealthy people in business (at least wealthier than you) will fuck you over if they can, and they will and they did.

i turned them in when something personal (not going into that here) happened to me. hopefully they got into deep shit for many years of slave labor at their business. the idea of working in places like that give me nightmares.

Its a weird thing, having power over people.. and what it can do you and them..

An update on the story below.. it appears 9 of the "slaves" have refused to help the police with their enquiries.. not if this equates to Stockholm Syndrome but it is not unheard of I am sure.

I wonder if they're still afraid for their safety.

  • Get rid of the minimum wage and this wouldn't be an issue (insert sarcasm here).

Seriously, I tremble when confronted by something like this. The fact that a person could treat their fellow human beings like this is terrifying. I just want to know how the suspects can justify such a blatant abuse of a person's human rights.

BBC news London had a short piece if the slavery problem in the city today.. and that's not even the main national news!

I think this is really shocking and I hope the government steps in to stop it ASAP.
