I just wanted to say that Pet Sounds is by far the best LP of the 1960's. That's all. Carry on.
I’ve seen Pearl Jam 25 times, Eddie Vedder 9 times, and Brad once.

Those are all mighty fine albums, but for my money it all comes down to Pet Sounds.

  • I like Pet Sounds, but it's not one of my favorites of the 60's. It is well respected and is usually on every one of those Greatest Albums Of All Time lists, almost always at #1 or #2. Over the years Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds fight with one another over that spot.

It's certainly a fantastic album, wouldn't be my #1 album though. Then again Sgt. Pepper isn't even in my top 5 Beatles albums. If it weren't for A Day In The Life, I would probably rarely listen to it.

Thank you for the Sgt. Peppers disdain. It's a fine album but it is never my go to Beatles album.

    Yeah, for me it's:

    1. Abbey Road
    2. Rubber Soul
    3. Revolver
    4. The Beatles
    5. Let It Be

After that I don't know. I probably listen to Help! and Beatles For Sale more than I do Sgt. Pepper.

same albums but different order. Rubber Soul, Revolver, The Beatles, Abbey Road, Let it Be. By the way your sig pic is my desktop pic.

Well, much like Pearl Jam and the Stones, my ranking of Beatles albums changes depending on the day and my mood. Next week I might be on a Let It Be kick, but that's sort of the general order I usually put them in. Tough to rank stuff like that.

I'm actually a little tired of Abbey Road right now because I've been trying to 5 Star the Abbey Road Medley on Beatles Rock Band on expert, and I've played through it God knows how many times over the past week, and before that I was having a hard time with Maxwell's Silver Hammer. I get so frustrated with that game sometimes that I think I'll never want to hear some of the songs ever again, but I do.

Stupid question, probably, but the album you two are referring to as "The Beatles" is the white album, yes?

How anyone could not put that one above Sgt. Peppers is beyond me. Really, I think you guys pretty well nailed that top five list, with the possible exception of Let It Be. (But I'm the same way with that day/mood thing.)

What's with the hate for Sgt. Peppers?

And no, Pet Sounds is not the best LP of the 1960s.

Yes it is. I think for me the reason I put it (and the others) above Sgt Pepper is that I like guitar. And the guitar in Sgt Pepper is kind of lost in all the sweeping arrangements and trippy-ness of it all.

The Beatles is kind of a mess, but even though there is a lot of shit on it, there are some great songs, and some great guitar songs. And the fact that it's a mess is kind of part of the charm.

And it's not hate for Sgt. Pepper. I just don't listen to it nearly as much as the others I listed. Even a Beatles album that I listen to less than the others, is still great. It IS The Beatles after all.

    JTH, yes it is.
Newch91, to each is his own. I can honestly say that my three favorite albums of all time are 1) Wish You Were Here 2) Pet Sounds 3) The Velvet Underground & Nico

    It's fairly simple:

What's the album that made Pet Sounds possible, which made Sgt. Pepper's possible?

    Rubber Soul.

I probably should have mentioned that when I said that Let It Be is the possible exception, I meant that Sgt. Peppers might make the list at times, Let It Be might be on there at other times.

So there's definitely no hate for the album from me.

I wouldn't say I hate the album. I just don't think it's as good as it's made out to be. I understand it's importance but the Beatles made better music in the 60's than that album.

Led Zep I and II, Axis: Bold as Love, Electric Ladyland are a few I would put above Pet Sounds and all Beatles' albums besides Abbey Rd and Revolver.

A few others that deserve a mention

    The Band-S/T
Neil Young and Crazy Horse-Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Probably the best Beach Boys album, did they have any others? I know they did but this is the only Beach Boys album in my collection. Did any of their other stuff come close?

    Rubber Soul is genius.

  • Actually Smile (though just released) is the best Brian Wilson album. Sorry Brian was the genius behind the Beach Boys.

Agree with everything but you are not a fan of Revolver? I have a sick obsession with that album lol.

I think the first one I really loved was A Hard Days Night. I still love that, my 2nd favorite by them.
