My story of meeting Ed and the boys!!!!

edited July 2008 in The Porch
Its been a couple years now but I wanted to share my story of when I met the band…Well here is how it went down... I flew out to Cleveland on May 19th, 2006 because my best friend played bball for the Cavs and Pearl Jam was going to come play in Cleveland... we wanted to try and meet the band so we went over to the Quicken Loans Arena at like 10 in the morning to see whats up… the whole area was on lock down but since my friend played bball there he could get us in with a thumb scan... we walked around till we ran into their security guards… but they informed us that band wasn't their yet... so we came back at like 5 and we were just chilln back stage during sound check… I can remember it like it was yesterday… they were playing “I am Mine” as we walked in… then about 5 mins later eddie came walking backstage... he walked right up to us and introduced himself as if we had did know who he was… then he jump up and sat on an amp case started talking to us...he was so cool and mellow... so nice... then Jeff came over to talk being the basketball fan he is… He knew who Luke was because he watched him play in college at the University of Oregon… we also gave them a bball autographed by the cavs… they said they were going to play poker to see who got to keep it… so they hit if off and Luke showed Jeff around for a bit and I stayed and talked to eddie... he asked, "are there any songs I wanted to hear tonight because he was writing up the set?" so I sat there with my FAVORITE ARTIST of all time and got to tell him what songs I wanted to hear... I can't believe it hardly even to this day as I am writing this... so if anyone was at the show in Cleveland ’06 you can thank me more the following songs : first I requested daughter/ it's Okay... than immortality because I had never heard it before live... porch, and yellow ledbetter... I also requested nothing man but he said his voice was bothering him a little too much for that one…then HE ASKED us if we wanted him signed some photos and he took some pictures with luke and I… He has a good sense of humor… he wanted us to hold if up on his briefcase so he could be taller than Luke… it was quite comical... "it's Okay" is a deadmoon cover I heard on their "2000 touring band DVD" that they rarely play... so it was so cool... Eddie also gave us VIP passes and 1st row seats where we could hangout on the side of the stage or back stage while they played preshow ping-pong and a handful of picks... the whole night like a freaking dream... getting to tell my favorite band what songs to play... we also gave Jeff a tour of the cavs locker room... they were so nice... well I am rambling now but it was awesome...

Really cool story. Terrible requests. Daughter and Ledbetter? Like they weren't going to play them anyway.
  • the three show strech of GR, Cle, and Det was the best 3 show stretch of that tour. they were on fire and in the best of moods, despite the rollingstone guy trailing around

Great story on meeting the band you lucky bastard. I went to U of O and remember both of the Luke's running the court. Specifically I remember watching the game when Luke Jackson had 40 points against Colorado in the NIT, he had something crazy like 29 straight points at one point in the game. I know he's bounced around the league quite a bit, where is he at these days?

haha thats so funny. So so cool.. Lucky boys u are! Thats a great story, even two years later :) I love those guys!!

I couldnt even begin to imagine what i would say if i was asked about the set list..

It would probably be something along the lines of .. "Could you play uh... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, erm uhhhhhh"

Ed would hate me.. id ask him to play all the tuff vocal songs :D (ie Rival and No Way) Yet i wouldn't be a total bitch, i'd offer to sing the hard parts :)

the Cleveland/06 show was a GREAT night, the crowd was on FIRE and the band were as well! Off the top of my head, a SUPERB version of Spin The Black Circle which i believe was dedicated to Danny,...would that be you? :)

Luke and I have been best friends since 1st grade (We won a state championship in bball together in high school too). Luke R was his roomate at UofO so I know him pretty well too. I just talked to Luke yesterday he was back in Atlanta trying out with the Hawks

Let me explain my requests. I wasn't requesting daughter for daughter, I was requesting it to hear "It's Okay". Which is a song that has meant so much much to me. You know when your just have a shitty day or just feeling down, all you got to do is put that song on It's gonna be okay!!!! and for Ledbetter to hear the opening riff with the lights on, after you have experienced a journey of 2 plus hours of music I find nothing more heavenly for me... i guess its just an opinion

Agreed, that is the chance of a lifetime to hear some rare gem. How come whenever someone gets a chance to put songs on the setlist, it is never anything good? At least ask for "No Way" and if he refuses, at least he might tell you why they don't play it! Aim high! At least lie to us, tell us you requested "otherside" and "brother", but got shot down!

I wonder if this happens often? I wonder how many times an "undone" get scratched off the setlist for "Jeremy"? I wonder if most setlists are influenced by someone along the way?

    Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Great pics and thanks for sharing your story. By the way other people do not rag a guy for song requests he made 2 years ago - he shared a very cool story and pictures that he totally did not have to share. I was not at this show, but I remember sitting home online following the setlist and having a blast! Thanks again!

I know the show was on the 20th... all I was saying is that I flew into Cleveland on the 19th... One cool part of the story that I forgot to mention was that... he actually took the time to write down the lyrics to "It's Okay"... during the show he read the lyrics right off a paper. For him to go out of his way to do that... its pretty cool
