"Alford plea (see North Carolina v. Alford, 400 U.S. 25, 91 S.Ct. 160 (1970)) (when a defendant maintains his or her innocence with respect to the charge to which he or she offers to plead guilty)"
—United States Department of Justice
The Alford plea is a legal maneuver that allows the Prosecution to keep the original conviction on the books.
This prevents any case that was tried by that specific prosecution team and/or the police (who provided the state's case with evidence and/or confessions) to request a re-trial based upon prosecutorial misconduct. It is a face saving loophole for the prosecution. Without the guilty plea, in brings into question the validity of other cases tried by this prosecutor and any inmate who was convicted by this prosecutor could get a re-trial.
The plea also makes it impossible for the 3 men to bring forth a civil suit against the State.
...
Now, regarding the West Memphis Three and the applcation of the Alford Plea in their cases:
If you were given a choice... either plead guilty and get off of Death Row and out of prison tomorrow...
OR
Maintain your innocence and remain on Death Row and incarcerated in prison until the courts system gets around to schedule you a new trial... during which, you would remain in lock up throughout the trial... which may go on for another 2 or 3 years. All because the Prosecution Tean fucked up
Which would you choose?
...
I imagine, most would rational people confess to anything to get out of a hellhole you have been in for the past 18 years for something they didn't do... right? You can still work on clearing your name... but, why spend the time clearing your name in prison, when you can clear it in the air of freedom?
...
Anger should be directed towards the Police who brought forth the forced confessions and the Prosecution for letting their career aspirations get in the way of justice and has resulted in the actual murderer(s) roaming free fror the past 20 years. They are the ones who fucked up because they wanted to close a heinous case by railroading 3 misfit kids.
...
I hope this clarifies it.

I bet a lot of the detectives/police who worked on the original case are nearing retirement and didnt want their names dragged through the mud (which is where most of them belong)..
