Help! iphone disaster!

while trying to upgrade my phone(3GS) had just loaded 4.3.5 and 5.16 onto it and i've literally managed to completely corner myself.
bought the phone off my brother, now all the phone screen is showing is an itunes logo with a USB cable and in itunes, it wont recognise the sim card cos im on a different network than he was but it worked fine the last three months after i had previously unlocked&jailbroken it.

can anyone help with this please? i had it for three months and everything was grand, now its just a lump..

anyone able to point me in the right direction please?

Usually you shouldn't update an iPhone that is unlocked/jail broken through iTunes. The programmers who make the software to unlock the phone generally release updates to keep up with Apple's upgrades but it can take awhile. Also, because it is an older version of the phone there is less demand for them to create an update. You may have to restore the phone to factory settings and then do an updated jailbreak/unlock.
